Switched my summer 22” wheels for my winter touring wheels. Thoughts and pics.

I just switched out my X7 M50i 22” summer wheels for my winter / touring BMW oem 752 black 21” with Continental AS tires: 285/45HR21”. The reason I run All Season tires is because I take my family to Florida every February and don’t want to be on winter tires from North Carolina on down. AS tires has shown to be very effective in snow, slush, and freezing rain the last few years getting out and back to the North East.

First thing I did was deactivate the Air suspension by holding down the toggle switch for seven seconds until the light goes out.

I next use a 4 ton floor jack. The X7M50i is a monster and weighs a lot.

Here is a good size comparison pic. The 22” 315 tires are steam roller massive. The 21” wheel isn’t exactly small but you can see the 315 size of the rear summer tires are in another league. Continental as well as other OEM tire manufacturers state that ultra wide tires even in AS and winter form are not nearly as effective in inclement weather and you can see why. They are big skis. The 285/45HR21” are not exactly narrow but I didn’t want to go any smaller for cosmetic reasons. My Continental 21” CrossContact LX are NOT runflats.

As I mentioned I used a 4 ton jack and aluminum jack pads that fit very nicely in the plastic jack point. My smaller 2.5 ton jack I use for the cars seemed a bit too small for the X7 and I am glad I used a much larger floor jack.

Here is the link to those:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

4 ton Floor Jack link:
https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/pr...k?cm_vc=-10005

All the factory lugs seemed to be only torqued to maybe 60 foot pounds? A little concerning and easy to remove. Taking off the 22” wheel will give you your ab and shoulder work out for the day.
Once removed I cleaned the brakes up extra good as well as the fender liner. What a great time to get in there and detail.
I ceramic coated my 21” black 752 wheels before installing them.
I torqued the new wheels to 100 foot lbs.
After all 4 wheels were installed I set the tire pressure to 33# front 39# rear. This is 1lbs above what the factory recommends. Then I went in to the iDrive and set the selection to the Winter/AS with my wheel/tire combo that was listed.
At this point I activated the Air suspension but it will not engage until the new tire pressure monitors pick up on the new tires/wheels. They don’t tell you this in the manual. Took it for a 4 mile test drive and the TPM recalibrated and the air suspension came to life at that point.
Ride is outstanding on the 21” tires.

Pretty easy job if you follow these steps. Today I ceramic coated my 22” wheels and stored them in the M-Performance tire bags.

Very nice! Paint looks wet Did you do the ceramic coating yourself?

Also, do you happen to know if we have front/rear center jack points so we can raise the X7 on all fours?

Thanks for the tip on the jack pads. Do they fit perfectly?

Jack pads fit perfectly. So good I purchased extra just to keep in my BMWs. They are aluminum so they don’t deform like some of the rubber ones do. With the weight of the X7, I wouldn’t want to try the rubber ones. Aluminum ones are cheap enough.

I didn’t notice center jack points but wasn’t looking. I did the ceramic coating on just my wheels and do it myself. I don’t ceramic coat my paint but use a series of detailing waxes in a process I have tweaked over the years doing concourse events. Every paint is different and fine tuned a few steps on my last X5 that was Carbon Black. Sapphire black responded just as well with it.

I looked at those but opted for the 4 ton for about the same money. It is steel so the jack weighs around 90lbs. The jack is also low profile so it also easily fits under my M2 Comp even though that car would need such a massive jack.

Dealership worked them in with when I purchased my X7 M50i. I worked in the tire/wheels in the deal as well. I see the tire bags are carried by most oem BMW suppliers. Well worth their price point. They seem very well made and even have handles built in. They just fit the 22” wheels with the 315 size tires.

That looks really nice, thanks for posting the pics.

I'm tempted to follow suit, seeing what yours looks like (accepting that with the British weather, mine is unlikely to ever look as nice and shiny as your X7 - mine has barely been dry since I got it in September!)

Mystro: How's the difference in ride quality and noise?
I've been pleasantly surprised by how composed my wife's '40i has been on imperfect roads and over bumps on the 22" 755M wheels, curious to see whether the extra rubber takes that further.

Don’t have enough miles on them yet. Just put them on but my initial road test felt smooth as glass over a semi rough paved road. Keep in mind my 21” are not run flats and that will make them even better.
The 22” wheels were/are very good and look the most aggressive but I am sure the 21” will be a touch smoother. IMO the 21” wheels are really the best ride/looks compromise size to get. It has a touch more sidewall but still a lot of wheel to fill the fenders. I will give a full report after our 2200 mile road trip.

I have in other threads but in general I am a P21 product fan. I am also a PCA concourse judge and have been doing it for decades so I have 100’s of little tips and tricks I do depending on paint color and condition. The best advise is avoiding self damaging the vehicle by letting dealership wash vehicle at servicing and stay away from all auto car washes regardless how “touchless” they say they are.
I recommend only hand washing which will eliminate a lot of potential issues. Try P21 paint cleanser before using P21 wax. I use a orbital buffer with the P21 Paint Cleanser.

Note the cheap disposal plastic seat cover on the drivers side. I have been using these for years when washing or taking vehicle in for service. It’s just easier when you are grimy and have to move the vehicle. Keep a couple in the car if the kids get filthy.

Looks fantastic.

On a side note, you shouldn’t over torque your lug nuts. It can cause them to snap. They need to be able to flex during different loads and temp.

I’d re-torque them to factory specs and maybe +5-10 lb/ft.

I believe BMW X7 lug torque is 105ftlbs. I used 100ftlbs. What am I missing?
