Garage List
I got a great deal on the Mobil 1 ESP for $5.99 a quart. It was not the 5w30 LL04 but the 5w40 MB type still (ESP). I am going to do a couple short OCI's as the oil was very thin and dirty when I bought the car. Typical of CBS.

What did you end up using?

The T6 is a good oil but it does not meet the BMW LL04 requirements. IIRC, the LL04 require ash <= 0.8 % to protect emission components. The T6 ash level is 1 % ( http://s02.static-shell.com/content/...6-brochure.pdf ).

For comparison, the Castrol SLX ash level is 0.8 % and the Mobil 1 ESP is 0.6%.

I've been using the ESP M stuff for 45k miles now. I'll send in another oil analysis shortly when I change my oil next week.

Not sure this would apply to me as I have blocked the EGR?

The low ash oil is still required to protect the SCR. This is still applicable even with the EGR valve blocked, unless the SCR has been removed from the car and coded out in the ECU.

As the scr is downstream of the dpf, I would think the dpf would be more prone to having the issue you are talking about. In any case I am removing the entire system soon, and am not worried about it. On a side note, the article you quoted I found amusing, it claimed an increase in gas milage from the use of def fluid, via the scr system lol...

Why do you find it amusing? It's probably true, since the EGR can be utilized less and the engine run a bit more efficiently for the same power, as the SCR can eliminate the NOx produced rather than having to run high EGR to produce the least NOx.
