M3/M4 running in MPG
Hi all,
I've covered just over 330 miles in my M4 now and whilst I appreciate that the driving style required for running in is obviously not the most fuel efficient, I’d be keen to hear what kind of MPG other people are getting. I’m fluctuating between MPG’s in the 17 and 18’s. Cheers, Joe

Remember that break-in time and fluids are the worst time for engine efficiency and power production. Wait till after your 1200 mile oil change to start benchmarking - though the engine will still be breaking in then.

Not sure if there is any break in coding here.... wouldn't surprise me if BMW had a different fuel/air mix for the first 1200 miles that tapered off leaning it out. You see different performance vehicles starting to do this more. Running a tad rich with a new engine for break in isn't a bad thing.

I know some people get much better mpg in their cars after break-in but it never happened to me. I follow break-in procedure and it seems that whatever extra consumption is caused by varying rpms and a tighter engine during break-in is evened out with the average higher rpms, speed and WOT used after break-in. The numbers seen are not surprising to me.

I have 750 miles and getting around 19.6 per gallon. Should get better after the 1200 mile service.

It's always good to have the I-drive reading of average speed together with the mpg readings. Other people mpg readings are rather useless to predict your own but with the avg. speed it becomes a bit less useless. The guys who are in the 40 mphs will likely get almost 10 mpg better avg. than the people in the teens.

That's incredible- fair play I never managed more than 250 miles in either of my E90 M3s and on several occasions less than 200 miles. Definitely hoping to hit 300 in the F80 as the price of fuel here is no joke although I believe the F80 has a smaller fuel tank than the E90 so we'll see.

Here's a funny story. A story in which my game playing finally caught up with me. In my '08 E9X sedan, I tested the limits to see how far I could drive an ///M3 on blanks (...you know, when the dash reads "----" ). I wanted to dispel/confirm a few rumors of a reserve tank. So anyway, I was about 14 miles in on a 'blank' tank and decided, "I'm going to head to the gas station, but first I need to stop at McDonald's for a bacon/egg biscuit." Well, while waiting in the drive-thru the car shut off. LOL! It wouldn't start again, and I was stuck in the drive-thru unable to move the car. A friendly group of dudes helped me push my car out of the drive-thru and into a parking spot. I had to call my g/f at the time to bring me a gallon of gas. I bet those guys got a good laugh. To add insult to injury, this occurred in a downpour. What's the lesson here? Only drive 13 miles on a blank tank in an E9X ///M3. Last edited by Sedan_Clan; 06-26-2014 at 01:30 PM.. |

BTW, I don't think I've ever been able to go 300 miles on a tank in my E92 M3. Maybe if I could ever find a stretch of highway without much traffic, but that is unheard of around here. So, good for you. Seriously, they should have given the F8x/Mx cars a bigger tank. And I've never heard of any mod that increases fuel capacity. If I recall correctly, mileage does go up slightly after break-in. So, to the OP, wait until after your 1200 mile service and report back. Cheers.

I plan to try ASS too in my primarily city <35 mph commute driving just to see how many miles I can get.
With my E92 V8 14/20 I got ~13.9. With my F10 V8 17/24 I got 13.5. Fuck the F10....
