Long-term ownership Repair Cost Budget?

Hi everyone,

Seriously thinking about ordering an 2015 M3 manual transmission.
I would need to keep it for 10 years, in which I plan to drive about 150,000 miles.

My question for you long term bmw owners is how much should one budget for repairs, once the 4 year warranty expires?

I know there's extended warranties available, but I don't think there's a 10 year / 150,000 mile 'bumper to bumper' available from BMW?

Given that, what would you guys budget for repairs from year 4 to 10?

I'm not a DIY mechanic, although I would change the oil and do other basic Maint myself.

Thanks

oil changes
brakes every 25-50k
reg engine maint.
suspension will be shot by 150k
suspension bushings will also be shot
tons of tires
the luck of the draw on the actual car, some cars just have a ton of problems. Waranties aren't usually worth it. better off pocketing that money throwing it into a savings account paying some interest.

Garage List
23 Bmw M3  [10.00]
Your full of it, in a few years BMW will come out with a G83 and everyone will be like. Hmm 3.8liter Tri-turbo v8 465hp & 635ft-lbs, revs to 9400rpm, 3100 lbs, 8speed DCT, Carbon Fiber this and that and it has cooled/heated glow in the dark M cup holders. Time to upgrade

I agree with the guy above, its hit an miss and can turn into a money pit after the factory warranty is up.

Psh, savings accounts return maybe a .1% interest? Put it in mid-high risk managed investment fund and see at least 5% return year over year.

I usually find its better to not bet against yourself in the long run. You do get hit with the occasional high expense but if you do the math you probably would've spent more insuring against it than simply eating the cost.

I thought the suspension bushings were out this year to do a bush-less setup?

I would wait till 49999 miles then if I were keeping it buy the extended extended coverage. Its less than 1/2 the cost of a turbo failure.

To give you an idea . On my 1996 Euro M3 E36, repair during 10 first years were around 2K Euro for 160K (kms) and on my 2005 M3 E46 around 1.5 K Euro for 100K
This is does not included :
- regular maintenance (around 2.5 K Euro for every 40K on the E36 / every 70K on the E46),
- tires (0.7 to 1 K Euro per year, I make around 15K with the rear and 30K with the front tires)
- brakes

If you keep the car above 10 years and run to high mileage - I have 286,000K on the E36 - then it can become really expensive... I am approaching 25K Euro (yes 25,000 Euro ) in repairs only for 18 years ownership

Just in the rear subframe to body mounts. The control arms and other suspension links, engine, transmission, diff, and shocks all still have rubber bushings that wear out over time.

2k per year from years 5-10 or 10k over 5-6 years and 100k miles

Inclusive of all maintenance and tires and assuming you do the core stuff yourself like oil changes and brakes.

Also assumes no turbos fail

This is of particular interest to me as it will be my first BMW purchase and I'm thinking long term ownership also. The body style and performance should make these vehicles worth owning for a long time.

Warranty covers standard maintenance for 4 years and is non transferable. I too say drive it like a bastard for 4 years then drop it like an ugly date.

Are there any major labor intensive services on the car? I hate adjusting the valves on my E46 M.

It will serve you well to 175K miles. Then, dump it.

I've held on to a 2001 530 manual sport package BMW from new so I've got some experience here. I'm about to order an new M3 and currently plan to hold on to it for about as long.

I do all my own work so these prices are for parts only.

One cooling system rebuild at $2500
2-3 brake rebuilds (disk and pads) at $1200
One suspension refresh (bushings, ball joints, shocks, tie rod ends) at $2500-$3000
Tires - I would expect for my driving that I'll buy 8 sets of rear tires and 4-6 sets of fronts

Plus usual fluids, filters, plugs
You'll have things break that you cannot plan for: switches, power window registers, AC controls, etc., etc.

Costs are my estimates in today's dollars without any real research into current parts costs for the car, but I bet I'm close. If you track your car, I have no clue how much these numbers will increase.
