X5d MPG seems underrated
Well, we've had the truck now for a few months and, to date, it's been perfect. Not a single thing wrong with it that required a trip back to the dealer. Very impressed with that, I've never had that happen before with any vehicle I've purchased, they all had something that needed to be sorted in the first few months of ownership.
One other thing that's kind of an unexpected surprise. Went out today as the wife was heading to work and looked that MPG we've been getting. For the last ~1000 miles or so, the average is 28.5! That's really impressive given that nearly 100% of that driving has been city stop/go traffic. I'm shocked that it's that good; the ML350 that it replaced struggled to hit 20 on the same route consistently. Around a 30% improvement, for a truck that feels a lot faster? Pretty amazing. My wife, BTW, can't stop gushing about how much she loves the truck. Especially the engine. She tells everyone how awesome diesel is in this truck and admonishes herself all the time for ruling it out. She's a convert, that's for sure. |

Congratulations Overtaxed, on the purchase, and on the driving/owning experience! Happy wife, happy life as someone said in the forum - can't argue with that logic!

I've had my 35d now for about two weeks. While that doesn't give me a lot of experience I also am very pleased with the MPG. I noticed the on board computer calculates a higher MPG than doing a manual calculation (about 1.5 MPG). Nevertheless I have not had less than 30 MPG (manual calculation) with mostly rural (not exactly city nor highway) driving. I'm very pleased.
Also no one can believe it is a diesel based on sound or acceleration! |

Wow you guys have a ton better mpg than I do. Overall average is 24.5 although for a SUV I think that's pretty fantastic. Wondering how much it will improve when it finally cools down enough to turn off the air-conditioning.

I don't know if BMW are just a bit more conservative with their claims compared to other manufacturers. According to my dealer they are conservative in terms of quoted power output and top speed, maybe they are the same with claimed mpg.
In my own experience I can easily get over 40mpg out of my F15 40D, imperial gallons mind you, and they quote mid 40's for a combined figure iirc. In my previous Lexus RX450h which claimed 48mpg combined I rarely ever got over 33mpg and drove the two vehicles in a similar manner with a slightly heavy right foot. |

2015 35d moderate mixed driving in suburbs, 30% highway. . 1st tank 21MPG. 2nd talk 25 MPG. Usually in comfort mode with light right foot. Does not seem to be better than gas!

I've now done 8,000km and averaged 30.1 mpg (us) in a M50d. Best of 32 worst of 28 on each tank. Mix of town and highway.
Personally quite surprised and happy. |

Mine would be the opposite experience. I consistently get 19.5-20.5, based on a manual calculation, and around 1.5mpg above that according to the trip computer. This is 95% city on surface roads with a relatively heavy foot. Really, how can you not have a heavy foot in this truck? I'm still happy with mine, though. Diesel's actually $.02 cheaper than premium at the moment; it's fewer trips to the pump; and it's 7-8mpg better than I saw with my E70.

Lifetime on mine (16,xxx kms), has been 9.1 L/100 or 25.8 mpg. That's about 70% city / 30% highway.

I don't know how people come up with these crazy high numbers, maybe eco pro all the way everyday?
The realistic estimates seem to be around 20-22 mpg for Diesel with mixed freeway/city in comfort mode. |

We have 2500 miles on ours. 23-24 in solid in town driving. 30-32 on the hwy driving 70-75. Ours seems to be getting worse with time instead of better.

Just passed 10,000 miles yesterday and the computer shows a life-time average of 35.1 mpg (imperial) and the trip computer estimates have agreed with the actual measured on the few times I have bothered to check. I couldn't be happier after coming from 19.1 mpg on a 4.4 V8 E53.
Furthermore, although the power delivery is markedly different in the diesel, the usable power on the road is much the same. |

My 2 cents: the more I drive on the highway, the bigger MPG is. I was at 12.7 l/100 km (i.e. 18.52 MPG) upon delivery, 14.7 l/100 km (16 MPG) immediately after ACS tune, and now I'm down to 13.3 l/100 km (17.69 MPG) after a few highway trips...
And BMW claims 42.8 MPG aka 5.5 l/100 km for the M50d... I don't know where they get these figures from, because I doubt I can make that even if I switch to EcoPro and just roll on the highway. |

Try Eco Pro with auto off/on disabled. Watch your foot and the MPG meter in the inst. cluster! Acceleration kills MPG. Driver (wife) gets 20 MPG going up and down steep hills at 15-20 MPH all day. But driving it in San Francisco, she gets 24 MPG -her daily commute has more hills than SF. It is on comfort and she could care less that there are 3 other settings. Highway driving is always north of 33 MPG. When she drove the R500 she got 12 MPG in the neighborhood, 14 or so in SF, 19 MPG in the highway. |

Just a comment. Has the new model (LCD dash) got a 'poxy' mpg swing meter? it makes me laugh when I hammer my E70 X5 on the German autobahn (actually the engine is never stressed even fat out) as it swings to the right.

It kinda sucks seeing all these neat numbers and unable to get even close to them.
Yeah, Brooklyn is a stop and go all the way. Plus I do enjoy the gas pedal Need to get a job farther away from home, so I can take the highway and watch mu numbers grow!.....yeah, that's it! |
