How many of you do NOT have an extended warranty?
Are you guys out there? Just want to get a feel for it since based on the extended warranty threads out there my car will self destruct after I pass the 4 year mark.

I dont - 81K miles, 2011 model w DCT (original owner) and just hit my 4 year anniversary. Staying on top of all maintenance and hopefully nothing major $hits the bed.
If i plan on keeping it more than another 12 months, I might look at an E.W. Last edited by Jet335i; 01-13-2015 at 05:28 PM.. |

I have but I really don't trust it. It's just a powertrain warranty, bought it specifically after seeing rod bearing pics everywhere. '08, 56k miles!

One thing to consider-- if you intend to sell the car yourself within the next few years it can be easier to find a buyer when there are some number of months left on a transferrable warranty. Lots of folks carry around an inherent mistrust of used cars and believe you are only selling it because of some latent issue with the car that could fail at any time. Cars with remaining warranty ease those fears.

69k and no warranty here. I happen to think they are a waste of money. At least it would be for me. No issues at all. Running good! Normal maintenance only .

Never bought warranty for any of my vehicles, or any devices. I think I've saved roughly $25k without purchasing any of those warranties.
Currently on the 6th year of ownership, 62K miles. 0 problems.

Car acquired 5 years ago. One more year and NOT paying for the BMW extended warranty will pay me back about $3500. Certainly can pay off for some people but it's a warm blanket that never pays for itself for most cars in my BMW experiences anyway

My factory warranty is up in early May, by which time I'll probably have 35K miles on the clock. Between the low mileage making me unlikely to come out ahead on a warranty and the fact that this car has proven so reliable, I fully expect to pass, despite my track addiction.
What I would like to see and would definitely consider is a high-deductible warranty, i.e. I'd pay out of pocket for any repairs up to, say, $2K, with the warranty only kicking in beyond that amount. In exchange for this significantly lower coverage I would of course pay significantly less for the policy. I don't mind the prospect of spending $2K on a repair at some point, but I would probably be willing to pay to transfer the risk of a $15-20K catastrophic driveline failure repair to someone else. But sadly I have not found such a policy anywhere, so I'll probably do bearings proactively around 50K. And for the record, the only issue I've had with my car so far is one TPMS sensor failure that required a replacement, and one of my rear sway bar bolts worked itself a bit loose, which my indy shop fixed with some red Loctite (the dealer wanted to drop the whole subframe to get at that bolt, and I said hell no). Other than that, just maintenance and a brake booster sensor replacement after it was suspected to have been damaged by brake fluid spilling onto it -- good thing BMW placed that sensor right under the brake fluid reservoir....

I have no warranty, and dont plan on getting any............
I own my Car outright that i bought at 51K on the odo and prefer to monitor it often for any possible major issues (which usually shows before they happen)........ I haven't driven it much yet as i still do drive my Camry to work but will do so less after the winter Another thing I wanna know is why do people claim they love these cars so much then sell them after a few years?? are people scared away by the potentially high maintenance/ repair costs? |

I know a few people who love their cars and sell them for precisely that reason. It doesn't make sense to me from a value perspective since they'll undoubtedly spend much more on a new car than just keeping a rainy day fund, but whatever. And I imagine there's a sizable group who really do love their M3s but also recognize that there are lots of great cars out there and want to try them as well. As for me, I'm only tempted by a Cayman GTS/GT4 and C7 Z06, but they would be expensive to buy, more expensive run on the track than my M3, and decidedly less practical, so the more I think about it, the more I realize that keeping my M3 long-term wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

jphughan,
Thanks for the reply while I could have bought a New M3 outright, I was fortunate enough that i bought my car at an auction through a friend who is a dealer so I ended up owning the car outright for cheaper than i had paid for my Camry brand new. For me this was important because I am NEVER buying a brand new car again nor will I ever finance a car again in my life. I have a few friends who are mechanic so for basic maintenance i will ask for their help and lean as much as I can, while i find a really good Indy shop that specialized in BMW's and M cars specifically (maybe an affiliate here) for major stuff. I think a blackstone report ever so often and monitoring bearings is a good thing. what is funny to me is to see people spending tens of thousands on Mods, but afraid of issues with the car outside of warranty. For me the M3 stays for a long time, and I am gonna get in a year an E60 m5 to go with it. Always keep a car like a (older beater)) Camry or Civic on hand in case something goes bad on the M's and I dont wanna hurry to fix or be forced to spend if I dont feel like it |

08 E90 with 43 K miles. I don't have an extended warranty and am not worried. Car runs perfectly. Only problem was power door locks, replaced under warranty. I change oil every 5 K miles, and have just replaced MT fluid, diff oil and plugs. So far this car is much more reliable than my friend's 335 6 MT.
