Melted my stock brake pads in 90 miles
So after 3 sessions at PBIR this saturday, I have melted the stock 2 week old brakes. BMW had just put these put on lol. The first set lasted a weekend at road atlanta, roebling and daytona before they were toast. So I guess that means I'm getting faster, or it was just hotter...lol. The track conditions weren't ideal. It was blazing hot and greasy. Under steered on entry, over steered on exit if I wasn't really smooth. Given the extreme temps, the pedal never went soft and the brakes never faded though. It took it like a champ. This car continues to amaze me. One thing is for sure though, we need more camber Camber plates and some pads are next on the list. My car only has ss braided brake lines, and I switch to a set of nt01s for the track. Anyway, here's some pics. please note, this isnt a post bitching about the stock brakes.

It doesn't surprise me that you killed your pads... especially running a non OEM and more tracked oriented tire.
In the picture of the NT01 above, it looks like the center tread is split. Is that correct or is it just the picture?

at least your calipers didn't change color from getting hot
i think you did yourself a disservice by staying with stock pads. personally, i would have swapped to a higher temp resistant pad (either race pads or high performance street pads) and a higher temp resistant brake fluid.

It was a last minute track day, otherwise I would have. I was going to be in palm beach anyway and I had to find a way to not go to brunch with my girlfriend and her friends. Also, to the other guy, the tread isnt split, its just the lighting i guess.

It appears you have 40-50% pad left still, so I assume you just had pad fade rather than burn them up completely, so you can still continue to use them on the street |

and thanks for sharing your experience
As others have mentioned, street pads are not really adequate for track use. However, I think that it is quite a feat that you were able to run them successfully with R-comps. Just shows how sturdy the stock irons are even with the stock pads. I am quite impressed. Further, the fact that you ran an R-comp for this track event significantly increased the stress on your brake system. So it is not surprising that you saw more wear compared to your previous events on street tires. (BTW, good choice on the NT01, I like them a lot ) As FTS mentioned, there seems to be plenty of meat left on your pads, so they should be still good for street use. I wore down my stock pads much more than that in a 3 day track event in the fall and was able to keep on using the pads for the whole winter without problem. As a side question, do you run with DSC/MDM at the track? Keeping DSC/MDM activated will accelerate brake wear and significantly accentuate brake overheating.

Yeah I really wanted to find the limits of the stock brakes on my own. I ran Euro mdm. It's really a big difference compared to us mdm. It didn't intervene hardly at all and allowed for some good tokyo drifts if I wanted to. Yeah there's no doubt they are fine for the street. They got me home no problem, just a little noisy (roaring under braking).
I never experienced any fade on track, I could brake just as late in the beginning and end of the session. So it seems to me they dissipate the heat quite well between the corners. A guy in a brand new c7 vette boiled his brakes in like 4 laps to where he had no pedal at all. The m4 just kept taking anything I gave it. I'm really enjoying this car more and more every time I track it.

Yeah, stock brake pads won't hold up on the track, nor will stock brake fluid. On the bright side, you didn't change your caliper color to Oxford Green like I did hahaha!

BTW, I ran with a couple of C7 Z06's yesterday for the first time. One was driven by an old man that was pointing everyone by, even me in my E36. Was fast as hell and sounded great on the straights though. The other one was driven by a younger guy on Hoosiers and he was really pushing it hard on the track. I couldn't keep up with him at all. Then his car went BOOM! Sounded like hell (cracked exhaust manifold?) and threw like 8 different codes. Flatbed trailer time, etc, etc.

As much as my C7 was a "better" track car than my M4, I never really trusted it. Maybe just paranoia. I definitely would be worried about the Z06's until they have gotten through teething pain because the car is capable of hitting such high limits that the mechanicals have to be stretched all of the time. In a couple of years when kinks are worked out, they will be hard to compete with on the track.

definitely beat them up a bit but should have a lot of street life on em I would think.
I'm excited to try my nt01s at my events next month .. first r comps ... rs29s are on and fluid is in & ready to go. the rs29s clunk just like others have reported.. but I didn't expect them to do it quite so much .. oh well, seems like they still stop the car just fine. btw, I love your excuse for an impromptu track day .. that's amazing and hilarious!

oh and are you getting much brake shudder .. looks like lots of pad deposit on there .. my e46 m3 kept doing that with hawk hp+ pads which I thought were supposed to be pretty good track pads .. I don't know if it's from not bedding properly or just exceeding pad temp range?

It might be the angle of the pic, but there looks to be a fair bit of pad left there. It has crumbled a bit around the edge, but nothing disastrous. The discs look like mine do on my dedicate racecar with streaking and smearing of the pad material. To the OP, how much thickness is left, hard to tell from pic? Definitely go with track pads next time though. They will perform better, last longer and be cheaper |

Will find out soon enough. My mechanic was working on that car too. Heard it had a tune.

I had the same experience with hawk hp+ on my old wrx. I don't think it is a credible track pad. Maybe autox or for a casual hpde where the driver is ok managing the brakes.
