Key fob battery life when left in the car
Completely random question / inquisitive idiot....does the key fob battery die quicker if you leave the key in the car? Just wondering if its continually pinging the car when inside resulting in shorter battery life?
If noone has the answer, I'll be doing the experiment... |

If it's like a sensor network, yes. Now I just had a friend get his car stolen for leaving the keys in the car. They ended up flipping the car and hitting a pole. Their family's insurance went up a ridiculous amount. That's the more obvious question.

What state does your friend live in? In California, insurance companies cannot raise your rates for a situation like that. They can only increase your rates if an insured is driving and is found to be at least majority at fault for causing an accident.

Out of sheer laziness when left at home in the garage! That way I never forget where I left it the next day. The garage is secure (3 different types of alarm sensors) so not worried about it in there...just don't want to kill the key say every 1-2 months versus the 3-4 years its battery would normally last by just leaving it in the car every night. I also live in an area where people don't lock their houses, or their cars typically. My neighbors leave keys in the ignition of their car in the driveway. I'm not that bold as have lived in cities, so am certainly never going to be that chill...
I had a Mazda that had a very slick keyless entry system where the key was the size of a credit card and as thick as 3 cards...easily kept in a wallet. This thing, while pleasing to look at, is quite large by that standard (1st world problem) and I usually have limited pocket space. Maybe time for an "M-Lanyard"...Or duct tape it to my coffee mug, that always follows me...M-key belt buckle anyone??? Last edited by Mr. Hankey; 07-01-2015 at 04:08 PM.. Edit: You might want to consult your significant others before using my method. They might have an opinion in this matter, especially if you borrow theirs.

You gotta be pretty darn lazy to leave the keys in the car. Isn't comfort access standard? Cheers.

I think comfort access came with the executive baggage but I'm normally wrong in these. I've lost so many keys in my life I truly have zero trust in myself. I would leave they keys to the car if not my handy hair tie key ring thing in a strap.

We have a friend with a high end MB and she leaves the keys in her car all the time. We have warned her but it is an MB so who cares.

While I don't disagree that the key is rather large (I'm assuming it's mostly battery), maybe if you stopped wearing skinny jeans you'd be okay?

"its my key fob!" Skinny jeans prevent pregnancies by making any man appear unattractive. Paired with an M4, internet is your only option for dating.

Ouch...I like to think of it more as "proactively lazy"...consciously doing something (leaving keys in the car) so that it saves me a trip later (when I realize I forgot the da#$n key in the house, again)...a little thought now can save some work later....ehhh sometimes. Lets just say that bumps in the pants can be distracting to others... ...already have a Constanza wallet... |

Treat your keyfob with love and respect. A Volkswagen robot killed a factory worker yesterday. His keyfob is being questioned as a possible accomplice.

The correct term is a "bro", as in "brozier".
Cheers.

I love the clip, but I believe it's been called both.

If anything it's bad for the lithium ion battery in the CAR because it's waiting & staying awake for you to press start w/ the key within range. just lock the car and place the keys on your sunroof or something.

This has to be another wind-up. Surely. Like the guy who wanted to drive his car around at 5k RPM all the time.
Why would you ever do this? How much of a numpty are you going to feel when someone works out how to get into the garage and takes your car? The phone call to the insurance company would be internet gold-dust. Please record it... "Sorry, sir, did you just say that you left your keys in the car every night, just in case you couldn't find them in the morning?" |
