Just had this happen on my 2001 Mustang GT last Thursday. Unfortunately I wasn't so lucky as it started a slow leak almost immediately. And like you, it was dead center in the tread. My tires were only two months old, but I got them with road hazard insurance. It was patched, the so luckily I paid nothing.

Hopefully you are okay!

Sorry about that bud. I had a similar situation on my F80 but I was losing pressure and the TPMS would go off daily. I took the wheel off and found the culprit and took it around to a local Firestone but they would not touch it because shops these days want to patch (where they take the wheel off and apply a patch to the inner side of the tire) versus plug. And a patch according to them has to be an inch or more away from the side wall to be effective. I guess a plug solution makes them liable.

So I went to a my local Auto Zone brought a $10 plus kit and $3 glue and plugged it myself. I looked on YouTube for examples. So far and 2k miles later it's still holding.

Only thing about a patch or a plug it reduces the speed rating of the tire.

Hope that helps!

Thanks! Its been almost 2 hrs and no drop in pressure...the spot where the screw went in is over 1.5" from the sidewall so I should be able to get it patched if it starts leaking. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I'm hoping since it hasn't started leaking that I'll be ok

The road hazard insurance comes in handy for these situations. $50 deductible and you're good to go.

I had the same problem but no "road hazard insurance" so i'm paying 600 EUR for two new front tires as the difference of tire profile between left and right is 5,5 to 8 mm...Nice option this insurance...

OP...had exact same event three months ago. Took it to local tire shop and they pulled the screw. It was of similar length to yours and did not penetrate the inner wall of the tire.

If you are so inclined, spray a little water with soap to see if it "bubbles"...poor man's way to check for leak.

Good to be lucky.

This depends on the manufacturer.

Some manufacturers do not have a reduction in speed rating due to a patch/plug.

I had the EXACT same situation with my car. Same feedback from Firestone guys and I too opted for the same exact solution. Tire has been just fine with the plug

What is it with this type of screw!!! My wife had one identical and just yesterday I notice this in my rear passenger tire. It must have been there for a while as the head is polished I had the tire checked and itwas fine and didn't puncture the wall. never noticed or had any loss of air pressure.

I believe you boys have stumbled on a solution to stud MPSS tires for winter use! Good job!
(Kidding in case anyone would actually try it)

better in the tread than the sidewall! i would just monitor the tire for slow leaks over time.
