Drum handbrake?
I know this is off topic but my friend is getting a blk, not sure what kind but it's for his e46 m3. He's asking me if the rear uses a drum handbrake inside the disk or not?? The bells are different or something?

It's inside the hub assembly. Like most cars these days.

I'm a little confused. Are you asking if there is an e brake cable or if there is a drum and a disc?
For sure there is an e brake cable. I do not know of a car that has disc and drum, but your friends could be the first one. |

It was common since the early years of 4-wheel disc brakes to use an inner drum brake in the rear for the parking brake only. I had a 80's 911 with the rear drum e-brake. The concern is that disc brakes don't bind up and lock as well as drum brakes do when used as a parking brake, so it was a problem that cars with disc brake parking brakes could tend to creep when left on a slope. Over the years there have been various engineering solutions to address this issue. Interestingly, my Viper has separate cable actuated Brembo mini-calipers on the rear discs to serve as a parking brake only!

Most cars with rear disc brakes (our M3s included) have a drum and shoes inside the rear hub assembly. The cable that attaches to the brake handle operates the shoes and engages the emergency brake. If you don't believe me take yours apart.

Right he is. Basically every car is set up that way now. Little bastards are hard to replace too.

I believed you but went for a thorough inspection on the weekend. Your right. There is a couple of shoes on each hub. I have never noticed this.

Even with a BBK. When replacing rotor hats, the rears have the clearance for the parking brake shoes; at least my Stoptech unit does (ST40)
