Low Coolant, should I get BMW brand or Generic Autozone
Low coolant light came on today, I never done anywork on this car before as I just took it to the dealer for service as I still have four year warranty until next year. Coolant light came on today, BMW will charge me for the coolant unless I make a service appointment, which I can't get in right away. Can I just throw in generic coolant made for BMW, or should I go to BMW and buy theirs (which I assume is some sort of re-branded coolant anyways),

If you want to save a few bucks see if there a MINI store near you. When I need some in a hurry it is $6 to $7 cheaper from their parts warehouse.
The guys above are right, don't be cheap!

1. Go buy a gallon of coolant from your BMW dealer (DO NOT use any other coolant brand).
2. Get a big bucket and mix that gallon of coolant together with a gallon of distilled water. 3. Pour the 50/50 mix back into the coolant bottle and the gallon bottle from the water and label each so you know what is in there. 4. Use one of those bottle mixes to refill your coolant and save the two bottles for a future coolant refill or top off as needed. You could just go buy some distilled water to top things off, but if it takes a quart of water to refill you may be shooting yourself in the foot through another winter and summer in Wisconsin. |

You can add distilled water which is what evaporated, unless there is a leak. What I would really do is a coolant flush. Get 2 gallons of BMW coolant or Pentafrost NF which is the same and a radiator plug.

Stopped by dealer on way home anyways, and they topped it off for free, was fine until I drove car 3 hours later , and low coolant light pops on again. Parked car in garage will inspect underneath car for leaks tomorrow , hopefully it's a broken sensor and nothing major and will get fixed under warranty.
