Question on Brake Lines & Fluid capacity when doing CDV

Hi Guys,

Just getting into the first real mods on the car (golf tee mod doesn't count!), and as I'm due for a brake fluid flush I was going to do a couple of other things.

First Question: Wanted to upgrade the brake lines to some steel braided ones (haven't picked brand yet, they seem pretty plentiful), right now I have stock calipers front and rear but may some day upgrade to either 330i, 335i, or BMW Perf kit. Is it safe to assume all stainless braided lines will be compatible with the various calipers/kits I listed?

Second Question: I've done a bit of digging and haven't found a definitive fluid capacity for the brakes. Not in the manual either - disappointing as I remember my old M3 had all fluid capacities listed in the owners manual (including diff, trans, oil, coolant etc). I see it commonly stated as 1 litre of brake fluid is enough to cover a flush, is this also true if one is doing the CDV at the same time?

Thanks in advance,
Ash

Sorry, one more thing - is there a recommended/best CDV? I see most are "drilled" OEM ones, is there one that is actually formed/made to flow higher amounts of fluid rather than being a modified OEM version?

I have not seen one that does not use the OE part.

I fitted the zeckhausen CDV. No problems to report. Not as noticeable a difference as I'd hoped for. Maybe I'm just c**p with my left foot?!

Anybody with thoughts on the brake line length question and amount of fluid needed for a brake and clutch flush?

I bought two 0.5l bottles of Motul 600 and still had some left at the end. Buy a litre and you will be fine.

You realize that installing new rear brake lines(SS ?) involves dropping the rear axle. Your better off doing that mod together with rear subframe bushings.

For the CDV-delete, just take out the CDV restrictor. See the CDV delete DIY thread, my post #97...

One liter of brake fluid is all that's needed. IF you want to be extra safe, have two liters on hand. I used a Motive pressure bleeder.

Some members don't even remove the restrictior "jet" they just remove the entire part. The two hoses on the car will connect with or without it.

Ah crap - no I didn't realize that. Ok that's a fair point then, I may just wait until I do the suspension and go through with it in one shot. Thanks for the heads up.

Didn't realize the hoses connect with or without the CDV! So yea, maybe just a delete is enough.

Thanks for the answers!
