NachoB is Back!
Dear 1addicts, I am back!
Yes, after sampling the waters for the last two years and having time to reflect..I am back. I had to get creative to get a 1M because as many of you know, I wanted a stripper which is hard to find. I also didn't want a modified car so I went north and east of San Diego. Very far north and east... Toronto, Canada. I found a stripper VO 1M with 14K KM. I have been working on this for over 6 weeks now and I just imported into the US in Buffalo NY. I know that the M2 will be a better car and and when it breaks down out of warranty, it will be tough but the 1M is perfect for what I value highly. M3Adjuster lashed out and said I hate fake...I admit I dislike a lot of silly things and I don't agree completely but there is some truth to it. I don't like fake, I like real. The 1M for me is real with all its imperfections and feels perfect for me. Finally, few things are accomplished alone and this was a tough deal to make happen and it couldn't happen without the help of David and Anna in Toronto who where the most generous people I have ever met and not only sold me their beloved 1M but worked with me for weeks to get the letter of compliance, shipping quotes, dealer quotes and countless other details to make it happen. My mom, who helped me sort out customs stuff and handled wiring etc. My family who hopped on a plane without any definite plan and are now all cramming into a 1M for a drive from New York to San Diego. Also, Derek Johnston (WLKSFTLY) who inspected and test drove the car for me. Being a 1M owner, he had a unique perspective on how it should drive that a regular paid inspector wouldn't have. Finally, all of you on the forum that have been cheering me on, sending me tips and offers before trading in. Thank you to all for your help and goodwill! Now the pics: Derek (WLKSFTLY) and I in Toronto 1M inside Customs holding facility. Scary place at first. My life in their hands. They came off cold and scary at first but halfway through helped me fill out all the paperwork and got me through. Thank you to them too..but they didn't want pics! : ) This morning at the hotel....I woke up and the dream was true, I have a VO 1M! Last edited by nachob; 08-15-2015 at 10:28 AM.. |

Alright! Man, what an adventure. The process to attain the 1M makes the car have all the more intrinsic value. Great find and great journey. Welcome back and enjoy the ride home! YES!!

Congrats!! A low mile VO 1M is an amazing find. Best color for the 1M IMO.
More pics of your journey home please.

Congratulations! You can show me the car when I come to San Diego on one of my regular trips to visit family.
Although my car also came out of eastern Canada (was originally a Toronto car but was sold out of Montreal), I was spared a lot of the hassles you went through because the dealer (eventually) handled them. If the US$ stays strong, pretty soon a large % of those 220 Canadian 1Ms are going to end up south of the border . . . . Have a safe drive back home! |

I would load those or something similar with a digital readout, then put the phone on the dash while you are driving for a short while so you can figure out the error in the analog speedometer you have in kms. In miles, my 1M reads about 2-3 mph OPTIMISTIC, e.g. it says 73 when the car is really going 70. Once you know what corresponds in km on the readout to the speed you are actually going, then you will be golden, unless you intend to outrun the porcine patrollers, which would be another option in the car |

Bravo!
I sold my '09 Le Mans blue 135i to a Canadian just after picking up my 1 M, so these cars can go both ways which is nice for citizens of both nations. I echo your sentiments vis-a-vis the M2. If I didn't have the einser M I'm sure I'd be jacked up about its arrival. But while much is not known it surely will not be as small, light, nor have the linear progressive steering that the 1 M rack exudes lock-to-lock, and frankly those are the 3 virtues that are must have's for me in a car of this type and price range. Which is why this car gives me goose pimples every time I hit the start button. I know I'm blessed to have it, and I give my Lord thanks every time I remember to do so (which is about a dozen times a trip . Hopefully you will do likewise, and pray to never let this one slip away. Godspeed on your travels homeward bound, and long may you both run.

Thanks to everyone for the good wishes. Having a blast driving it non stop. Some guy in an black e92 m3. Pulled up beside in Indiana, downshifted, held the gear and launched. If he's on here sorry. I don't do that on the street. : ). Too old for that. I really like the coolness of the KM speedo but had an offer to swap and might consider it.
Yes. A lot of patience has been required especially from Canada. I know blotto is selling his. If anyone wants to try it I can let you know what I know now. Mine got complicated. There are a lot of little details to think about. Really happy to be back! Thanks |
