2008 E93 Engine Malfuntion Error at startup

I am new to the group.

Any suggestions for cause.

2008 M3 E93 with 67,000 miles, original owner. Never tracked. Weekend driven. Tried to start today and failed. Pushed on gas pedal, slight back firing, engine malfunction icon appeared, RPM indicator @ 4000.

Should car be taken to the BMW Stealer or does anyone know of DIY fix?

Start off by pulling the codes w/a OBD2 to know whats the problem?
