Considering a "base" M3 E92...EDC and other Q's.

Hi,

I have been driving a DCT equipped 335xi, but recently sold it and would like to move up in the world. There is a really nice, 15k miles 2013 6MT M3 for sale locally. Options are: Premium package, heated seats, and EDC.

He said the EDC is the same as what you would get on the Competition package, but minus the upgraded 19" wheels. Is this true? Or are there multiple options here? I would lean toward something with a competition package if it enhanced handling, but if it is just cosmetics, I like the 18" wheels better, as long as I can get the EDC suspension upgrade.

Also, how much would this car retail for new, and what should I be paying? He is offering it for $50k. The car is mint.

Comp pack offers more than EDC and better wheels. The suspension is also upgraded and sits about half an inch lower. does this improve handling? Maybe. the EDC i do believe was available as an individual option without comp package so he is likely correct, the edc is the same as what is on comp package vehicles. I think MDM was only on comp package so you would also be without that.

considering year options and mileage i would say price is within the ballpark. no idea what msrp was when new but i would guess around $65k-$68k?

i second the above.

you'll see the term "zcp" thrown around a lot, its just bmw's code for the competition package. i have a zcp m3 and i mostly wanted it for the edc because it makes for a comfortable daily driver. there is a noticeable difference. i'm also glad because it is a great ride height. not too low so that i'm scraping on everything, but not high enough to where i immediately want to get lowering springs.
if you think you are going to get coilovers in the future, edc will be worthless and you'll have to get the edc error light coded off at an additional cost.

I have MDM but no comp package.

Hey bud, Comp Pack include; enhanced EDC (adaptation also in sport), enhanced MDM (individual braking rather than power limiting only), different suspension (believe both spring and chocks) 10mm lower, and 359 rims. Not sure how much difference one feel during daily driving, but looks good with lower setting + rims and the MDM allow a lot of fun while still provide protection. In short Comp Pack imo does make the car feel even more special.

Good luck!

Thanks! I am leaning toward holding out for a comp package equipped model. Sounds like it may be worth the extra $. Thanks!

If you plan on making modifications such and coilovers and wheels then competition pack probably isn't worth it and it would be better to put the difference in price towards the mods.

You're right that EDC on the Comp Pack is different from standalone in that the Sport mode is adaptive, whereas the non-Comp Pack EDC is adaptive only in Comfort and Normal. You're also right about MDM being different in that it's more permissive than the non-Comp Pack MDM, but you're wrong that the regular MDM only limits power. That is just basic traction control. Braking individual wheels is stability control, and all BMWs that have DSC of any kind can do both. MDM is just a less restrictive mode of DSC, and it just so happens that Comp Pack MDM is more lenient -- but when MDM does intervene whether on a regular on Comp Pack car, it can cut power and/or brake wheels. It's also worth noting that Euro MDM can be retrofitted to any M3 (even those that didn't come with M Drive from the factory if you purchase a bit of hardware, otherwise it's just coding), which is more permissive than even the Comp Pack MDM.

i think it sounds like a good deal. Do you plan on tracking it at all (minimum/all the time) or just as a DD? I have ZCP 2013 and i don't plan on changing it. I enjoy it, but agree with pooyab if you plan on putting on coil-overs and rims i'd safe the $$.

I personally find Sport mode too rough on the street, even in Comp Pack cars, so if you won't be tracking the car, I don't think that's particularly meaningful. MDM as I mentioned above can be improved over Comp Pack spec regardless of what type of M3 you have with simple coding if the car already has M Drive and with coding plus an easy and cheap hardware swap if it doesn't, so that shouldn't be a dealbreaker either. As for the lowered ride height and wheels, that's mostly aesthetics and therefore personal preference, with maybe slightly better handling, but the wheels can obviously be acquired separately, and the lowering/handling can easily be achieved and surpassed inexpensively on the aftermarket with mods like Eibach/H&R springs -- so again, shouldn't be a dealbreaker IMHO. The Comp Pack wheels are also half an inch wider than the 19" 220Ms on the same axle, so technically they could handle wider tires, but unless you want to really push the limits of the tire width you can cram under those fenders, either wheel should accommodate the range of tires an owner would be likely to use. Wider tires are also not necessarily better, but that's a longer discussion.

In terms of value, if a car already had 19" 220Ms and EDC on its build, then Comp Pack would have added another $250, so from a value perspective when buying new it's not bad. I personally skipped it because I preferred the look of the 220Ms, but I've also since learned that the 220Ms are forged wheels, whereas the 359Ms that come in the Comp Pack are not -- and if you look at the cost of those wheels, you'll find that the 220Ms are actually much more expensive than the 359Ms. Not sure how much wheel strength matters to you.

(And before any Comp Pack fanboys flame me for bias, yes I'm selling my non-Comp Pack M3 at the moment. But that doesn't change the truth of anything I've said above.)

Source? This topic has come up many times here and the answer has always been that the 359Ms are cast using a method that delivers strength close to forging, but are not truly forged, whereas the 220Ms are. But if you have credible evidence to the contrary, I have no problem being proven wrong. If that were the case, though, I would be very keen to hear possible explanations as to why the 220Ms despite being narrower and produced in greater volume due to being available for longer are significantly more expensive than the 359Ms....

the zcp wheels are not forged. they will fetch more money than the 220m just check the wheel sales section here.

I am quoting from my 2011 BMW M3 Coupe/ BMW M3 Convertible sales brochure..pg. 43 which describes the Competition Package. This article states it too. http://www.autoguide.com/manufacture...view-1399.html

As I recall, the brochures and Ordering Guides varied from year to year, some claiming the 220Ms as forged, some claiming both 220Ms and 359Ms as forged, and some not saying "forged" for either one (like this one for 2011 and this one for 2013). It's hardly the only example of an ordering guide information error.

No. and that's why they are heavier.

most of the forged wheels offered in the m3s were poslished including the e46m3 wheels. the 18s and 19s for that model were forged. the zcp were not.

the 220s are forged and if i'm not mistaken made by fuchs. the 219/18s and the zcp are cast made by bbs.
