Extended warranty for CPO
Hi everyone. I have about 1 month left of my CPO on my 2009 M3 with 40k miles on it. I am thinking of extending the warranty but I am not sure what the pro's and cons of the different options are. I know I could go back to BMW but that is going to be big $, I have heard of 3rd party warranties but I am not sure if they are a huge hassle, don't cover certain things, etc. and I have also seen CarSense warranties thrown around. Does that mean I would need to take my car to CarSense for the work done? That kinda scares me. Could someone shed some light on this? I know there are other threads but perhaps someone who has gone through this could save me the day it would take to parse through it all.
Thank you! |

BMW will sell you the EVP (Extended Vehicle Protection), which has multiple levels of protection and different durations. It's not cheap, but very customizable to your specific needs and the price is negotiable. Very low deductible and super easy...no reimbursement forms or anything stupid like that.
As far as negotiating that price, I would suggest going back to the dealer you bought the car from and using that as a bit of leverage. Repeat business is what they want, especially in the service department. Otherwise, go to the dealer you typically get the car serviced at and see if they'll deal on price instead. FWIW I bought the gold EVP and pushed my warranty out to February 2017/100k. It was about $4700. It covers everything except the stereo/nav and the power folding mirrors. $50 deductible. Just used it the other day on an $800 FRM module replacement.

Thanks, I guess I will give BMW a call and see what they say. It seems like $4700 would be a lot for just 2 more years of coverage because I only put on roughly 6-8k a year on it.

You can buy more than 2 years worth. When I bought it a few years ago, it was nearly 4 years in total coverage beyond the factory warranty. You have to buy it from a dealer, not directly from BMW USA.

I would look at 3rd party warranties outside of bmw imo. Ive had positive experiences with my company and take it my local BMW for all the repairs. The dealer charges the company instead of me.
