Strange sound when cornering hard

Hey all,

On a rare empty and smooth 270' onramp here in SF, I was able to push the car a little bit. However, throughout the cornering - which was just below/at tire squeal levels (no comments here guys) - I heard this strange grinding-like sound. It all happened very quickly and I was not able to replicate it afterward.

1. Has anyone experienced this?
2. Anyone have any idea what this is?

Thanks

My old 325e made noises like that when turning because of the well-aged limited slip diff. Never had it happen on my F80 on ED though. Not sure if it is normal for the active M diff, which can go 100% open as needed.

How much throttle did you apply during the turn? My old car made the noise when my foot was off the throttle, which caused a little bit of lockup during turns.

Note that this noise happened to me during normal street driving and got worse and more frequent as the car aged. It was a low pitch sound that cycled in volume and pitch a little bit. Not like grinding gears.

What corner did you hear it from? I've heard a weird sound once from my back passenger side when I was on my ED trip. Haven't heard it since.

I applied partial throttle to maintain speed through the turn, so it doesn't sound like the same problem. Thankfully! A worn diff would be bad at 4,000 miles...

It sounded like it was from the left, but honestly by the time I realized there as an abnormal sound and tried to identify it, I was off the turn already and then it was gone.

I wonder if it was the brake shields that were rubbing on the rotors due to the g-forces while turning... Much like they can make grinding noises if peebles get stuck in there.

Sorry can't help - my car makes the same sound while cornering regardless of whether I have an erection or not.

(With apologies OP - if you knew the kind of week I had you'd understand why I needed to throw some humor in at that moment)

Maybe a pebble got caught in the brake shield, who knows. If you can't replicate it, don't sweat it.

Missing? As MK points out this is a thread about cornering with a woody. Maybe OP should lay off the little blue pills before driving?

Close, it's likely the e-brake cable that rubs on the dust shields. The 2nd and much less frequent and less loud reason to scratchy "brake" noises. I have it too now and then, the dealer checked it and aren't concerned to a point they want to do anything and I'm fine with that since it's very seldom and only when I really compress one side by either hitting a hard bump or cornering hard on uneven roads.

Thanks - I'll bring it in to see what they think

Yea, I heard that same noise on track. I would guess the diff or one wheel braking.

I'm not a mechanic, but I would hear it consistently on only one turn, which probably meant I would have lost it without the noob assist.

I wouldn't stress about it.

I have the same issue going on. Real loud banging noise when taking a hard right mostly entering or exiting the highway.
