paint correction on trunk lid in front of spoiler

I began paint correction on my car this past weekend. I am having trouble getting the scratches out right in front of the spoiler on the trunk lid. I can get my pad up alongside the side of the spoiler to where the sidewall of the pad hits the side of the spoiler. However, there are still some scratches about 1/4" in front of the spoiler. Does this area have to be done by hand, or am I missing something? I am using a porter cable DA polisher with 5.5" hex logic pads BTW.

Also, since the spoiler is so small, what is the key to getting the scratches out of the spoiler (pad angle, etc.)?

You can try bringing the pad closer to the spoiler, given that the pad is primed on the outside edge. But you risk the chance that the backing plate may strike the spoiler. I would personally prefer to do that portion by hand.

With regards to the spoiler, you could use a smaller pad or do it by hand.

I get the pad right up against the spoiler to where the sidewall of the pad is touching the spoiler...I can't see how I can get it any closer.

Hmmm... You'll need to be somewhat careful that you don't blow through the paint on the edges of the spoiler. One thing you may want to try is getting a 7" pad that overhangs the backing plate and angle it in there. If that doesn't work you have to try and do it by hand. Or if you want to get crazy, remove the spoiler, polish and then reinstall.

How did you successfully polish around the spoiler on your F80?

Also, I recently purchased the Nankin Autoscrub pad, which I used for the first time this past weekend with my porter cable DA. What speed setting should I be running it on? I watched a few videos online, and people said to run it on speed setting 2? Only thing is that the pad does not rotate on that low of a setting. Does the pad need to rotate in order for it to be effective? I bumped it up to 4 and it rotated. However, it marred the paint pretty bad. Is that normal? Luckily, I was able to get the marring out with the M105.

I removed my spoiler and polished before I put the M Performance on. Which pad did you get? The Fine version or the Regular? Did you break it in on the glass?

I bought the regular version (since the car has never been clayed before by myself, and I doubt the previous owners cared enough to clay it). Yes, I did break it in on the glass. Maybe I did not break it in enough? The instructions said about 1 minute of break in time, which is what I did.

I don't like the regular version. Although, it shouldn't jack the paint up that badly where you need M105 to get the swirls out. I would get the Fine and run it on speed 3 on your PC.

I will say that it was about 40-45 degrees out when I was using it...not sure if that would have caused adverse effects.
