Help - Broken Brembo Caliper Bolts
Well,
My brake job just got completely derailed. While removing my main caliper bolts (M10) from the brembo caliper BOTH snapped. They were both backing out fine (by hand with an extension bar) and I was even going pretty slowly. I noticed that the torque required to back them out did not decrease much if at all while I was backing them out. They both snapped. I honestly have no idea what to do now. I welcome your collective wisdom |

Unsure of how to extract the bolts without taping, so I'll defer that to other commenters.
You may want to contact forum user Focusedintntions, as I believe he had a lead on sourcing replacement bolts.

I order all of my bolts from Schmiedmann, ECS is another option.
I typically order an extra or two of everything with each order- saved me a few times. Other than that, in your situation I'd let a pro sort it out. Good luck. |

You should be able to remove the caliper mounting bracket from the hub 2 18mm bolts. Then take the bracket somewhere to have the broken ones removed. If the caliper itself is stuck on the bracket you may have to undo the brake line and take the whole assembly to a shop.

^ Take it to a reputable shop and get an opinion.
Many shops may be hesitant to drill out any bolt in the caliper. Integrity of the caliper can be compromised. I ended up having to replace a front caliper when my bleeder screw snapped. You may have better luck with your situation based on where the bolt is and size. |

You should be able to get the caliper off based on where the bolts snapped. The caliper isn't threaded itself so it shouldn't be held on by the bolts. Try to separate the pads from the rotor and then pull the caliper straight off. From there, I would follow FactorX's advice and take the bracket off to get the rest of the bolt removed.

Just an FYI, once you get it fixed, it is not a good idea to take the caliper off using those bolts, you should undo the bolts where it is bolted to the knuckle.

The caliper bolt holes do not have threads so at this point the caliper should be able to slide off the caliper bracket. The caliper bracket is bolted to the knuckle assembly which will have the broken bolts still are seized into the bracket.
Remove the caliper from the bracket (might take a little prying in order to slide up and off the remaining broken bolts) then remove the bracket by unbolting the two fasteners from the knuckle. Take the bracket to a machine shop and have them extract the bolts. Buy new bolts from the dealer or supplier. If they can't remove the remaining bolts buy new or used brackets.

You nailed it. I was thinking about this last night when I went to be and "Hoping" that there were no threads on the front side.
sure enough this morning I got out there and was able to pop the caliper off after getting pins removed. After that it was channel locks and some forearm strength as I had enough to grip. New bolts on the way from BMW. Quick question: Do I use a special anti-seize since we're working with aluminum? Thanks for saving the day everybody! I took a bit of all of your advice and got it worked out. Quote:

Okay. I just found out the hard way that BMW doesn't sell these individually. They were happy to sell me a $750 caliper though.
Anybody know where I can source one of these? I went to 4 different shops by me and nobody has them. There is a glimmer of hope here: http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showt...=647346&page=2 But I couldn't figure out which one the correct on is |
