Inspiration: Highly tuned S54
Stumbled across these on a Swedish BMW forum. It's not a Z4 M Coupe, but it's still a S54 that resides in a E46 M3. Thought I'd share.
Spec: - Stroked to 3.5L - Forged crank shaft - Ported head - Bigger valves - Stiffer valve springs - New cam shaft - Forged pistons - Rev limiter raised to 8800 rpm - 413 whp - Etc... |

If it really pumps out that much horsepower it's amazing! But the sound isn't anything special really, i bet it sounds much nicer in person though.

The owner just clarified some thing about his build. It cost him between 25,500-30,200$ in todays exchange rate between SEK and USD (favourable for the USD). That includes all parts and labour. According to the tuner building the engine the stock engine is only spec'd to 8300 RPM, after that the the engine will wear FAST. So raising the rev limiter on a stock engine isn't a good thing in terms of reliability (but it will give you 20-25 more hp, for a while ). What also was said is that the CSL intake only flows slightly better than the stock intake, which apparently can flow nicely up to 480 hp. A tune will not yield much without a different cam shaft, unless you raise mentioned rev limiter and compromise the reliability and health of the engine.
Most bang for the buck is a 296/280 cam shaft, which is the maximum duration the stock valve springs can handle reliably, and a tune and that will give you about 370 hp. That's what was said in the thread, so don't shoot the messenger. However I tend to believe someone who've spend more on the engine than the car is worth and the job was done by one of the best tuners (Köhler) in Sweden when it comes to NA BMW engines. |
