Selling my M4 in the US
I was thinking about selling my car in the US just because the exchange rate is so favorable right now. My salesman told me I can't sell it out of the country for at least one year.
Has anyone heard of that? Thanks Dan

Yes. In the US i had to sign a document agreeing not to sell or ship the car outside the US within the first year. Reason being, people would buy the car and ship it overseas and sell at higher prices...

how does bmw Canada enforce this restricted export rule ?
By denying remaining factory warranty ? Bmw Canada is going to sue you , given if op has never sign any doc . |

US people will be hesitant to buy it because it can't be registered in the US without documentation from BMW canada that it passes the US laws.
That is likely how they will enforce the rule. If you are moving they will give you the docs, but it might be tough to get the docs for a private sale. [based on my experience importing my car from Canada to USA in college] |

The current m owner can sue (for lost sale damages) bmw Canada since the dealer and bmw Canada have failed to provide full disclosure to the buyer for this restriction.
Also if bmw Canada has no export rules for non m models, then the next question is why ? We all know bmw Canada will honor factory warranty if a Canadian buys a demo or slightly used car from a US bmw dealer once all the required docs are gathered up. |

Virtually all the manufactures have non export agreements that are signed on delivery. This is not unique to BMW!Getting 50 state compliance letters out of non-NAFTA manufactures in Canada is a very tough thing to do.

this non export agreements ? Why are the dealers not disclosing this when consumers are buying their cars ? I certainly have never signed nor have I ever seen this document when taking delivery for any new cars I bought.

They are correct, of you bought your car new from the dealer, there is a non-export clause for the first year. Not just BMW, a lot of other manufacturers have this clause as well. It was clearly disclosed to me, but if it wasn't, it's in the standard paper work you sign when the car is delivered.
I can not speak from personal experience if you did export your car, but my dealer told me the ppl that get burned are the people you sell it to in the US, because when they bring it in to BMW in the US for servicing it will be flagged, and warranty may not be honored, and the dealership you bought it from will also be flagged for selling to an exporter, and of course you will be flagged for exporting. My dealer told me they have refused to sell to customers after they were flagged for exporting to China, as the dealer does get penalized by corporate. Now he could have been BSing me the whole time, but when my wife bought a Merc, she was told the same thing. |

I'm not sure where this information is coming from but my dealer actually suggested I sell my 2016 m4 state side as to get a better return on my money. After reading this post I asked about the compliance letter and I can have one printed out if need be at any time.

Selling 2016 Yas Marina Blue M4 stick
Hello everyone its a sad day when its time to sell the car you've put your hard sweat and money into. I am selling my 2016 Yas Marina Blue/Opal White M4 manual. It has around 40k miles on it. I never had plans on selling it, I treated it like my baby for years, however I barely drive it anymore and I want someone else to enjoy all the work I've put into it!
