Considering a 2016 Cayman GTS
I got interested in Cayman and started working a deal on it. I figured if the deal was good enough I'd go test drive it and make a decision.
Things were moving along favorably and I got sucked into some incorrect reporting on CarFAX for my vehicle. I'm working to get that resolved but it might be next week before it is fixed. Unfortunately/fortunately, in the time that has passed I'm now back on the fence about it as I still do enjoy my M5, but reality is telling me it will not last forever (though I am a little emotionally attached to it having done European Delivery with it) and I know future costs will be coming (I'm at 76k miles on my '13 M5). I'd like to collect your thoughts. Has anyone moved to a Cayman GTS or dual-owned a Cayman GTS and an M5? I know the paper arguments about the GT4 but the uplift in price/perception for it kills any interest I have. I am aware of the 718 but also the stigma of a 4 cyl is a lot for me to overcome though I do like the tech upgrades in the 718 vs the outgoing GTS. This is the specific one I am considering: https://porscheofchattanooga.com/inv...rds+Red+615875 The only other car I am seriously considering is a Jaguar F-type Coupe, but I deplore the navigation in it and the wife already has a '14 F-type Vert V8S. No kids, no dogs, a once a week commute of just under 100 miles (one way). Anyway, I'll leave it at that - appreciate your thoughts / advisement. |

As balanced as the Cayman is, I really think you are going to miss the power you got from the F10. The cockpit is a bit cramped too if you are anything over 6'.
I started my Porsche journey from a 986 Boxster, to Cayman to 997 etc etc.... To me, the balance of the mid engine is really fun to drive even though it lacks the proper oomph. Would I make the change? Probably not. I would pony up and go the 2014 911 route and see if you can get a fantastic year end deal.

I agree. It's going to feel slow coming from an M5.

Agreed that it will feel slow. However, the initial move that I made way back when as I pondered moving from BMW to Porsche involved trading my F10 M5 for a Carrera S. I had a hard time getting over the power difference at first. Then, as I drove the car more and more, I just got hooked on the Porsche experience. They have a special "feel" to them. I never looked back. 5 Porsches later and many exotics later I still find myself in love with Porsche. To me, it is THE very best brand hands down. I'm pondering a move right now to another. You truly cannot beat them.

I've only owned 2 and I haven't driven a TTS yet. Porsche GT cars are great. If I go back to Porsche then it's definitely going to be GT3 or GT3 RS.

I currently own both M5 CP & 981 GT4; although not GTS happy to answer any questions you may have about these cars in comparison to each other.
I am also currently debating whether or not to extend warranty on my M5 (I'm only at 20K miles after 3 years), buy Macan (have driven both diesel & turbo) or consider 718. I do have an X5M test drive scheduled end Sept, if that doesn't go well, it may be goodbye to BMW for now. With regards to the 718, I too have resisted the temptation due to the 4 cyl engine, however, the torque characteristics during 'lazy driving' and the addition of GT4 rear suspension & 991 TTS rack make it intriguing. I have been playing around with the 718 configurator but then keep thinking 5 cyl TT RS... |

The TTS is blistering fast man. You need to drive for sure. Best DD on the planet IMO. Having owned a 991 GT3 I think it will feel like a dog to you now that you have a 570S.

I'm glad to see all the conversation this had spawned and the opinions being shared. I've got a little drive ahead of me tomorrow morning and then I'm going to test drive it. I'll let you all know what I think or decide. They are pricing favorably, financing lower than I would have expected, and offering a strong trade in price to me. But, if the car isn't what I want then I'll still pass.

Hey boots. This 2017 is pretty quick. I bet they'd run pretty darn close :-)
Hope you are well.

If you are planning any track time it's a no brainer. For daily light to light spirited driving you're going to miss the F10 power. Even with the weight reduction on the Cayman....the power to weight ratio will definitely still favor the F10. Now for fun factor and as stated above by Coldlist......the Porsche experience is all that you hear it is...........Phil

thank you! I will always remember my m5 fondly but now it is a different chapter. It is awesome that people on this board can be complimentary and not just 1 dimensionally aligned with a single manufacturer.

OP-CONGRATS on that sexy ride. Perhaps the nicest Cayman GTS I've ever seen. The Porsche experience is like nothing else.

I spent some time with the wife driving it yesterday to get her used to the car and how it drives differently than her Jag F-Type v8S vert. She really likes it as well, it is only slightly smaller than the Jag but obviously lighter as well. The pops and crackles in the Cayman in sport plus are not at the level of the F-Type but they are very competitive. Induction noise with the engine behind you in the Cayman wins hands down.
