how much have you spent on modifications?

Just curious, how much have you guys spent over the years to modify a car that is already really nice.

Me so far - none.

1) how much did you spend just for 'looks'.
2) how much did you spend that actually made the car drive better?
3) does your wife know about it?

1) how much did you spend just for 'looks'. About $3,000 for spoiler, lip, steering wheel, window tint

2) how much did you spend that actually made the car drive better? Not a huge improvement in performance but I have spent about $10,000 for wheels, tires, intake and exhaust

3) does your wife know about it? Yeah, right....

I have added custom touches to every vehicle I've ever owned, but doing it on an M3 can get expensive real fast. You get what you pay for though - don't cheap out.

I'll bite:

Cosmetics -- $8000 (Performance seats aren't cheap)
Performance -- $12000 (Might as well include the bearing swap in this category)
Wife/gf -- Knows about, supports and is currently pushing for a 991 GT3. We'll see.

Should be an interesting thread. I'm in.
Only got mine a few months ago.

1. Looks: $0. Content with the sleeper E90 stock look.

2. Performance-ish: $2750. Planning to SC in the near future.

3. Wife: She don't ask & I doesn't tell. As long as bills (/her shopping CC) get paid on time. However, she is staking claim to my early Tesla Model 3 reservation.

1. Cosmetic: $500 on splitters and springs but am about to switch up the wheels, budgeting $1,500.
2. Performance'ish. $1,200 for a Dinan exhaust.
3. Wife, she knows about the stand-out mod stuff like interior trim and the "maintenance" stuff. If mods tally up to more than the value of the car, I've gone too far. She thinks I want a 911 anyway (sorta true).

I'm at roughly $37,000 in mods.

I've had the car since November of 2014.

I have a problem.

PS, my wife encourages my hobby, and has a car of her own to mod, which is arguably cooler than my M3

Around $20k.

My wife understands that I have certain hobbies that I not only love, but that are quite therapeutic. My car/tracking is one of them.

Fair warning: Mods are like tattoos. Once you start, it's easy to keep going...

Jerez black E93 M3. Mods so far: Window Tint, Vinyl wrap chrome trim, Gloss black M striped Kidney grills, Gloss black side gills with smoked light, Powder coat wheels gloss black, Lux h8 160 angels, wheel spacers - $1200.

Next up is Spoiler, diff, lip and splitters, springs (may be - not sure), Exhaust Mod...and the list goes on.

Wife tried to talk me out of it initially but after realizing its not working she doesn't care any more The only thing is I dont try to do it all at once. I try to space it out so that it doesn't look like I am burning $$$ on mods

Hard question to answer, because a few mods were done when I bought the car, and some of my mods were purchased second hand (i.e. discounted), so ill do this a couple ways:

What I've personally spent on the car out of my own pocket (dollar amount, not value):

1) how much did you spend just for 'looks'. $1685.00
2) how much did you spend that actually made the car drive better? $8450.00
3) does your wife know about it? Big ticket items, yes. It's hard to hide a supercharger or brakes from her, but smaller items that add up over time, no I don't bother telling her

Total dollar value of mods (sourced brand new) that the car has from myself and previous owners:

1) how much did you spend just for 'looks'. $3225.00
2) how much did you spend that actually made the car drive better? $16700.00

So, total dollar amount out of my pocket for mods only (maintenance not included) is around $10135.00. Total dollar value of mods for everything aftermarket installed from me and previous owners, if it were to be sourced new is around $19925.00.
Ouch.. That hurt to think about..but it's been a hell of a ride

Jesus, and I thought my $20k was up there. Not sure how you could even spend nearly $40k in mods, unless we are talking full track prepped car with supercharger, brakes, suspension work, and everything from iND's interior catalog.

Good question. Does the profession thread exist?

Well, I can say my cars MSRP is significantly more than my current annual income.

My wheels alone were $7k. BBK, exhaust stuff...air ride...it all adds up.

I'll do a proper add up when I'm relaxed...haha

I, for one, spend all day spotting grammatical errors.

When I'm not doing that, I'm making tall double no-foam lattes at my local Starbucks. The tip jar bought me my Akra Evo and BBK.

This is an interesting point as I also purchased the bulk of my mods "pre-loved". We should start a thread comparing the actual vs. retail cost of the mods on our car. The over-under might help us sleep.

While I've spent a bit more than $20k in mods, their retail value is probably twice that.
Akra Evo bought for $3k, not $7k.
Performance seats bought for $4k, not $6500.
StopTech BBK bought for $3k, not $5500.
Ohlins and Vorshlag bought for $2k, not $3500.
That's almost $10k in "savings" right there.
