CPO E70 or F15?
Recently lost My e90 in an accident, a nice person forgot to STOP... and tore the front clip off my car...
so fast forward a few weeks/ and a few test drives... and..... Fingers x'ed to be buying a CPO X5d over the NYE weekend... Driven a bunch of 2013(e70's) and one 2014 (f15).... prefer the older e70, IMHO better steering feel (e90 had active steering - loved it). and 6 spd transmission seems to not always be hunting for the fuel economy gear.. (I haven't owned an automatic transmission in over 17 yrs.) anything one should look out for on the E70 35d ? Thank you in advance.... |

I have had a 2013 X5d for 10 months, and am about to take it in for my 5th emissions-related CEL. I love the truck, but the SCR system is complicated and prone to failure.
The California emissions warranty will protect me for a couple more years, and then I expect I'll take a hit on resell.

For D...I highly suggest going to F15 solely based on emissions equipment failures.
My experience has been typical of most E70 D owners. 5 or so emissions errors in 2 years of ownership for a 2012 CPO. The only thing great about the E70 is the steering and IMO the looks on a sport package with flares and 20s looks way better than a F15 M Sport body, though, a F15 X-line with 20s and flares look pretty close to the E70. |

Enjoy the search process. I have a 13 X5d with 70k miles and a 335d with 103k on the clock. Both run like a swiss watch, knock on wood.
If you are buying used, you have to look at 4 factors: a). Where was it driven. (South is better than north due to snow and salt) b) how was it driven (you can tell by looking at how often brakes and tires were replaced) c) have a very close look at maintenance records. (Did it have a proactive or negligent owner, were oil changes done frequently). D) fuel issues. The key to diesels is getting good diesel fuel. (Records can tell you if the car has has fuel related issues). |

'12 X5 35d here for the last 3 years and 70k miles on the odometer. Nothing emissions related yet, but my wife has a 50 mile commute every day. Which probably helps, since diesels are made to be driven. The only check engine light so far was for glow plug controller, and was replaced under CPO, after the BMW tech misdiagnosed as a bad glow plug. She's also coming up on her first (yes first) brake job in the next 1000 miles or so.
No major complaints. Diesel is returning 26 mpg overall, the stock leatherette seats look brand new (cinnamon interior with 20-way sport seats), replacing the tires with Nitto Motivo yields about 10k miles more than the 20k miles we got out of the stock run-flats (20" sport wheels). Coming from GM Tahoes/Yukons, the BMW A/C truly isn't even comparable in hot Texas summers. My last Tahoe could chill sides of beef in the back of the black truck! The redundent HVAC settings in idrive are frustrating and unintuitive. Small creaks and rattles from the passenger and rear driver door. Front sun visors are too small and don't extend to cover the side windows. There's no remote factory remote start. |
