To Warranty or not to warranty
Hey guys, looking at getting into the X5M game (coming from a 135i) and looking to see what most do after the factory warranty expires. Seems that there are some drastically differing views on whether or not to pocket the money or shell it out on "protection." Used the search bar, and found the typical stuff about injectors going bad, as well as expensive timing chain replacements etc, so I do realize (even with my 135) that repairs are pricey.
Whats the consensus? |

The injectors are part of a recall / longer warranty period, So those are fine now.

I've commented ad nauseam about how third-party warranties are often a rip off. However, for the X5M, provided you get an exclusionary warranty, that may be a wise choice.

Yup, I've seen some of your comments to that effect in other posts. Thanks for the input again!

If people are pocketing the money, how much are yall budgeting in yearly maintenance costs. I had an indy shop near me say around 4k a year on a 50i. That seems pretty ridiculous to me

I don't really budget-I just spend when costs arise, which have been nill beyond routine maintenance, but I have the 3.5i.

4K a year sounds about right for a 50i if you're driving average miles. It was an 80K vehicle new and maintenance will reflect that. The 35i would save you some maintenance $. |

When buying my wife's 3.0si we paid $2500 for the extended warranty at the dealer. I was super angry about it until 10 months before expiration we had to have the water pump, thermostat housing, valve cover gasket, and a few other things I can't remember fixed. Total cost was about $5k but we only paid the $50 deductible which made me feel great. That being said, it was mostly dealer labor cost and the dealer kind of sucks in general. They always take way way too long, don't communicate, and often mess up. This includes when they replaced our valve cover gasket and ended up cracking the valve cover and oil managed to spray up on the windshield somehow on the highway. Total parts for our warranty repairs from a decent distributer would have probably been $1500 max. So the question is whether DIY is worth your time. Otherwise you're still going to pay a lot for labor at an Indy especially for an ///M car. Parts and labor are going to cost more.

I tripled my money on a warranty on a Touareg and got a 12x return on my 08 4.8i sport. I haven't used the ext warranty yet on my 50i ( 3 mos old), but IMO you'd have to be a nut or a certified mechanic to pass. Every repair seems to be a min $1500 on these things. You ARE going to spend a couple of grand that the warranty costs anyway. It's 100% without question going to happen. its just the cost of doing business in these rigs, so to not insulate you from massive repair costs is just nuts.
my 2 cents anyways |

Back in the late 90s, I was killing extended warranty companies left and right with my two different 5-series. Since then, it seems that they've figured things out (I lost out big-time on an unusually reliable 06 Touareg and 04 X5) and charge an exorbitant amount for worthy coverage, which would still likely pay off for an X5M.

I agree with what jiggz said above. It would depend on the warranty company, terms, and cost. If you drive 20k miles per year and drive your car hard 24/7 it's not bad to have the peace of mind. Personally, I drive 5k miles per year and stay on top of the maintenance. Most of the money I have spent on the M have been mods, downpipes, dinan exhaust, wheels, etc. so for me it didn't make sense. IMO save the money for mods.

It's really just rolling the dice, is the piece of mind worth it to you.
I bought a CPO Z4 and haggled enough off the price the CPO warranty was basically free but I ended up needing a new head 1.5 years later. 11k dollar job. So yea in that instance it was worth it. Now I've also had cars where nothing went wrong with it and the money was wasted ...... Or was it.... If it helps you sleep at night you'll be covered incase a trans takes a shit or if you blow a piston but these are extremes and more than likely you'll be nickel and dime'd to death with small repairs. At the end of the day each car is different and each one will have more or less issues than the other so you may find yourself in a tank that never needs a thing or a lemon. If you plan on keeping it for the long haul maybe it isn't a bad thing but it's up to you. If you read most posts each trip to the dealer seems to cost 1k or more so you can reach the price of the warranty very quickly. |

Keep in mind, most of the thousands and thousands of owners out there are not enthusiasts on this website. Therefore, overall, you don't hear about all the cars that have very few issues compared to hearing (often) on here about cars that have issues.
