This might be good bye.

I have owned my ’09 135i for 3 months tomorrow and I absolutely love the car. The relationship with this car however has not been as smooth as I would have liked. I have been struggling 2.5 out of my 3 months of my ownership with random rough idling when stopped or low speeds but never at highway speeds. So far my 1er has spent most of its time with the seller who is dragging his feet to “Fix it” and has required multiple trips back and forward. So far the seller has done 4 of the following services in order:

trip 1: (Seller) 2 new injectors and new fuel sensor.
trip 2: (Seller) All 6 new injectors.
trip 3: (BMW Dealer) in for injector warranty which later turned into only cars 84months or newer are covered, so I ended up paying for testing injectors only. Result: misfires and injectors are index 9 not latest.
trip 4: (Seller) All 6 Plugs and coils.
Trip 5: (Seller) walnut shell cleaning.

After all this car is better but still has random rough idles at times says the seller who still has car. He refuses to put in index 12 like I have asked and BMW recommends because he has sunk in a lot of money trying to fix it already. Adding index 12 plus the required new hardware will kill him he says. Because the new index 9 injectors plus all the other fixes has not fixed the car, he has offered to buy the car back for 100% refund. I still have a couple of days left on the Lemon Law warranty so I refused his buy back offer and asked him to deliver my car tomorrow which for some reason took some effort to make him understand that I decline his offer. So weird that he is so hot in buying the car back now without even giving me a chance to look at it again, I don’t understand that one. Tomorrow after delivery, I will be bringing the car to a newly discovered BMW specialist/enthusiast indy shop. Wished I had bumped into these guys from the beginning. I’m in the middle with this situation; like a battered wife part of me wants this to work so bad since I am in love with this car’s current setup. Aside from this problem, this car is mint everywhere else. The other part of me is thinking more logically and wants a break up taking the money and running based on everything seen so far. I guess I will have to wait and see what comes out of tomorrow. Anyone here have experienced similar situation? Did it work out for better or worse?

Just asking because of your short term ownership. I know a lot of people who switched to german cars and they complained of rough idle because they were using 87 and 89 octane. Once they went to 91/93 their complaints stopped.

with so many issues in such a short time, I can't see why you wouldn't accept the offer to buy the car back, then go find a better example.

My last 5 cars are/were German so 93 is all I know. What are the symptoms of the HPFP? Does it have its own warning light?

Another question for all of you that have index 12s. Have you had any more injector problems after upgrade?

What level of mechanic are you working with? For example, do they have the software needed to code new injectors?

Asking because your description sounds sorta like a generic used car lot or maybe one step up. I'm wondering if things have been done properly.

I was thinking the same, doesn't sound like someone knowledgeable on these cars has been working on it.

index 12 injectors are the best, ive never heard of anyone having problems with them. I had injector problems a few months back and got some cheap index 8's just to test myself to see if i can successfully install and code them. I did it and its very easy to do. I have a laptop with INPA that can code for injectors, so at some point I will be upgrading to Index 12's and installing them/coding myself. if your having problems id recommend index 12's and you have to get them properly coded to the car

Yeah, today I found that the seller's mechanic did not code the index 9s and worst 2 are leaking. 1 coil is fried and are some generic brand that fit extremely tight. 3k to fix with new coils and index 12s.

As much as I love the car, I think I am leaning towards taking the money and running.

3k? your wasting your money haha. 6 OEM coils are like 130$ and can be installed in like 30 mins. the injectors should be around 700-800. A dealer would probably install for 3-4 hours labor even at 100$ an hour you should be looking at 1200-1300$

While on trip #3 at BMW they quoted me 2,400 for index 12s. Index 12s require new fuel lines.

I think I would ask for your money back and start looking for another 1er. Now at least you know what to be on the lookout for. And find a car that is still under warranty like a CPO.

You could easily be left to deal with this in court and who knows how long THAT would take. Its time to start over fresh. Don't be married to this car.

hahah yeah. they most definitely do not, and even so, fuel rails would be that much extra. maybe a couple hundred bucks more. you should still be around 1.5K or under. idk where the extra 1k is going but its most likely a waste.

Here to Stay.

So a while back after this post, I almost grabbed the tittle and returned the car but looking at the car one last time with all the options I want and after Paying for Tax and almost 3months of insurance I reconsidered one last try. I ordered index 12s, OEM Coils & OEM Plugs for 1k at FCPEURO and had my Audi mechanic take a whack at it for a reasonable 4 bills for labor. He was able to code the injectors and car is like it should have been when I bought it, smooth and strong ever since. Thanks, ianc, the new fuel line were not required like you expertly stated. Now about 3k miles later car just turned 40k and it is all good. So happy it worked out maintenance wise, now the headache of chasing the seller for a refund. Long story short we will be going to court. Anyways, on a higher note JB4 is next for a complete all smiles. Thanks everyone for helping.
