Wife doesn't want me to get an M3
So my wife doesn't want me to get an M3 because I want a 6MT. She's trying to convince me to get another Benz or even the 5 Series. So now it comes down to, how true is happy wife, happy life, really? Shall I test it and just pull the trigger? She barely drives; wherever we go, I drive. Plus we live in the city so public transportation is easy.
Edit: To be clear, she does have her own car. Last edited by Rh6363; 10-29-2017 at 03:14 PM.. Reason: Clarifying. |

How often is she even going to drive it?
If my foot wasn't so messed up, I'd probably have a MT... My wife never drives my car.

The saying is true. If she is happy, you will be happy. If you get an M3 she will constantly think that you don't value her input/advice. Even if she never drives it but rides in it, an M3 rides very differently than a 5 series. If it's going to be a weekend only car, then you could probably get away with it. As a daily driver, good luck with that.
Probably not what you wanted hear. I'm glad my wife loves driving, has even tracked her car and encouraged me to get my M3.

In any healthy relationship valuing the input and opinion of your significant other is very important especially when it comes to financial decisions that effect you both. A car isn't worth ruining that for.

Wife is family, an M3 is just a piece of metal that you'll keep until the next model.
Get a DCT and you should both be happy enough with that compromise. But wifey is first. |

Normally I would tell you that you shouldn't let other people tell you want to do with your money. If my wife told me not to get the M3, I would tell her it's not up to her. Thing is, she has her own car. It sounds like in this situation, the M will be the only car and if you are in a position where she needs to drive, she won't be able to. If that's the case, listen to her, she is right.

My wife and I have never had a "his" car and "her" car. All of our cars have always been an "our" car. She told me once that we own cars that she would never have bought if she had not been married to me, but because she was she had the joy of driving what we bought. Because of this, one of our cars is a 6MT M4 and the other is a 5MT Z3. Happy wife - happy life

Never a good idea to do something that your spouse feels strongly you shouldn't do, regardless of what it is. However, if you continue to talk about it and she sees how important it is to you to get the 6MT instead of the DCT (presuming it is), she should relent, particularly if she doesn't drive it much. Figure out how to change her mind instead of doing something she hates, unless you want her to be pissed for a long while and then do something you hate.

Not good to resent your wife driving a lifeless auto transmission that she "might" drive. You owe it to your marriage to get the manual.

Tough spot. Way too much minefield and individual situation specific to tell you whether to acquiesce or ignore her request. However, you may want to consider the M550. Balls fast, auto, more comfort. Good luck with keeping you both happy, as that will be the only win.

In every relationship there is a boss and there is a bitch (in a good way). Know who is who. You have to get what is best for you. It's your car. Most people around here will say M3/M4 is best. Having said that, you also have to get her buy-in. Otherwise she will not be happy about it. Also, you may not want her driving it all. It's a serious car that is not for everyone. |

M550i is about $80K!
Sounds like the worst of both worlds. Cost more than an M3, not manual and not fast. But that's just my opinion. It depends on the person... Quote:
