Z4 3.0 or TT 3.2 Quattro

I am thinking of buying a demo/slightly used car from Seattle and bringing over to Vancouver (wish I could bring new vehicles but law). Anyways, which one of these car should I get? I know this is zpost blah but I just want your best non biased answer. I am going to post the same thread on TT forum. The important things I care about are performance, reliability, gas milage. Thanks!

It gets cold where you are. The Z4 is better balanced and handles better at the limit, but the TT is a better all weather vehicle. Stick with the TT if you have to ask. Seriously. My Z4 is only a weekend car. For cold weather and winter conditions AWD rules the day. I put my family members in Subarus.

I think I can offer a pretty non-bias opinion here... I just picked up my 3.0si coupe about 2 weeks ago... coming from a significantly modified TT Quattro 225 coupe. If you need to drive in any weather, the TT is the winner hands down. I drove my TT every single day of the year, and when there was a foot of snow on the ground, I'd be out and about taking my friends to empty parking lots for the most spectacular looking, yet completely controlled, drifts. Also, if you're looking for performance and are into modding... ditch the 3.2 and go with a 1.8T... a $500 APR or GIAC chip on the 1.8t will get you to ~270 hp and tq.

In terms of gas mileage, my 3.0si engine seems to be as economical as the 1.8T... 23mpg (70% city/30% hwy) and upwards of 30+mpg on the highway at legal limits. I can't speak for the 3.2 TT... but I doubt you can get up to 30+ mpg on the highway.

Reliability wise... I think its hit or miss with BMWs and Audis.. I never had any major issues that I couldn't fix myself by doing research, buying the part, and doing a 15 min. install (temp sensors and the like).

I moved onto the Z4 because I was at 100k and was tired of my "arrest me" red TT... I also got tired of the incredible grip of AWD... I'm young and want to get sideways when I feel like it!

If you have any more questions feel free to ask... I'm at work so I'll be checking in often

Now you can hear an opinion from a Canadian!

Weather is NOT an issue for you despite what some others have mentioned. Vancouver, as you know, gets very little snow, so unless you take a lot of road trips to snowy areas, that AWD is not that necessary. I drive my Z4 all year round, and we get more snow each winter than you probably see in Vancouver accumulated over 10 years!

Some details you failed to mention however include whether the Z4 is a coupe or convertible and whether the TT is the coupe or convertible. Also you didn't mention what year each of the cars is and what the price difference is.

I'm assuming you're looking at both convertibles?

Now gas-wise, the TT will definitely eat more gas which is probably important to you 'cause your gas prices are usually about 20 cents higher per litre than in Ontario.

The only things I think Audi had over the Zed is a more plush ride (not as stiff of suspension) and AWD. I live in Iowa and we get a lot of snow, the Zed is not great to drive on a lot of snow but it does very well in all other conditions. My 3.0si is my daily driver and I love it.

Kamal, 1.8T was discontinued. 2.0T is now the 4cyl standard turbo engine with the 3.2 offering more kick. However the 2.0T generally has more mods, but any serious power would come from the VR6 once you start getting crazy into bigger turbos, etc...

Having come from a Quattro 180 TT and still owning a Jetta 1.8T, I must say the Z4 offers so much more balance and performance than the TT or Jetta ever did. Z4 turns better than the TT and all around handles better. The TT's also tend to be FWD biased and won't offer that same RWD feel even though it is considered AWD (Unless you get a ~$1300 Haldex mod to change the bias from front to rear).

I've driven my Z4 through snow with a set of snow tires and I had no problem whatsoever navigating through 2-3" of snow on the road. The car is so well balanced and predictable that there really is no problem with the Z4 being an all weather car.

Yea I know the 1.8t is gone... but the original poster was talking about used cars so I assumed Mk.1... the new TTS is rumored to have 265hp on the 2.0T with AWD... that should be quite nice.

Either way... in terms of balance and handling... Z4 hands down
practicality wise... TT hands down
performance wise... a slight nod to the 3.0si engine... I'm pretty sure my mod'd 225 TT would have put the hurt on the 2.5 and 3.0i engines

The forum I found to be the best for Audi TTs is Audiworld...

http://forums.audiworld.com/tt/ for Mk.1
http://forums.audiworld.com/tt2/ for Mk.2

Here's a post when I announced my shift to the Z4...
http://forums.audiworld.com/tt/msgs/1764506.phtml

Alot of these guys are in love with the Z4 coupes especially... I think its the design and rarity that does it.

If we are talking 3.0si, totally unbiased opinion Z4 FTW!!! That engine is awesome! If you are talking coupe versions I would still have to say Z4. More reliable, better performance and definately more fun to drive!

Canadian Import

I didn't think the z4 coupe was allowed in Canada (M-coupe yes, z4 coupe NO)

It had something to do that it was not originally imported by BMW Canada, and BMW Canada won't give a letter of admissibility for it. They gave some lame excuse that the bumper height makes non-admissible.

Have you got your admissibility letter yet?

I find it funny the perception folks have about the weather in Vancouver or Seattle for that matter. Folks it does not snow here and it is not cold, get over it. It is wet. I live near Seattle.

My concern when considering either car would be am I going to have it in a garage over night or out in the weather. I would never want to have a soft top exposed to normal conditions here day after day. I believe the soft top would become a soggy mess after a short time.

My Zed is in the garage all the time when it is raining and I only take it out on nice days. So for those 4 days a year I have a ball.

I go to Seattle often since my firm's Seattle based and it is freaking cold! I even saw snow back in January (first week of Jan). I don't know how often it snows but it is really cold for sure

Your question is really not very good, and folks can only tell you their choice of a avehicle. If you really want some good advice, you should tell us what you are looking for in a sports car, what you expect from a sports car, what you need to get from a sports car. If you don't provide some criteria, you might just as well flip a coin.

I found a review: http://fifthgear.five.tv/jsp/5gmain....=489&pageid=-1

Summary: Zed performs better but TT has lower CTO and is more practical (duh!)

Well I go to LA too and it is too damn hot. Depends on how you define cold. 40 degrees most winter days is not cold. 15 below is cold.
