Oil level sensor shows low after 8.8 liters
I did an oil change on my e92 m3 letting the oil drain for over an hour (level on 4 Jack stands), removed the excess oil in the filter housing, and refilled initially with 8 liters of oil to avoid overfilling.
After warming up the car, the oil level reading said it was excessively low and to add a quart. Being cautious, I add 1/2 a qt and the reading went up a bit to the minimum. So I add another 1/4 but it still reads minimum. If the motor oil capacity is 8.8, I'm very close to it, yet the oil level reading says it's at the minimum and to add another quart. I'm worried I'm going to overkill it. Am I doing something wrong? |

You did the oil change correct. If you put in 8.8 and the level is in the ok range drive it. Check it after driving for a while. It will go up. When the oil level is between the minimum and maximum don't over think it. Just drive the car. You are in the acceptable range.

OMG PANIC!!!!!!!!!!!
the sensor is slow to read accurate levels sometimes. If you know you have enough oil in the car, move on and stop worrying.

That's why the oil meter is a pain in the ass.

I think as long as you know you put 8.5 qts in the motor, you are good to drive and wait for that pesky sensor to catch up.

This happens all the time. Put in about 8.5 bottles and drive it for a day or two and check again.

9 qts without draining the oil from filter housing will read exactly in the middle.

Just done my oil change last month. Placed the front car on race-ramps for a little over an hour to drain the oil after a 60 miles drive. Thoroughly sucked out oil from oil filter housing. Add 8 bottles and the oil level was at below minimum in red. It asked to add a full bottle and so I did and now I’m just below the max line.
Maybe draining your oil over an hour can affect the max line. |

I actually poured about 9.25 bottled and it reads max. This was after draining it completely level on 4 Jack stands till it stopped dripping, and draining all the oil from the filter housing.
Possibly wasn't a full 9.25 liters though because I didn't have the patience to get every drop out of each bottle. |

You have to remember that even after draining oil out of the motor there is still oil in the oil cooler. It is entirely possible you could drain more than 8.8L of oil out if some seeped out from the oil cooler, which means it can take more than 8.8L to fill it.
Mine usually takes 9.25 L to get it close to full. I usually just put 9L exactly in after the change, and then top up a little bit after a few days once the reading calms down. |

I have always elevated the rear about 3 inches over the front so as to tilt the motor slightly forward. I use four 3 ton low profile floor jacks. It's quick and easy to lift, adjust and drop.
Let her drain for about 30min, drain out the filter housing, both sumps and will always show exactly full after a refill of 9.0L. If I extend the drain for an hour, it will show full after 9.25L. This is consistent between both e92s I change the oil on. For oil consumption, one, I add 0.5L after 3000miles, the other add 0.5L after 2000miles.
