Key Fob Replacement

Hello M3 E92 Family,
I just purchased and installed the below Key Fob Replacement as the original Key Fob was worn and the logo was scratched and faded. This worked perfectly! so I wanted to pay it forward for anyone else having this same issue. $12! and its like new!

Nice, thanks for sharing! How did you go about programming it work with your car?

Do you have comfort access? In that case it should not work. Should it?

Turns out it's just the fob case, or outer shell. Here's the description from Amazon:
  • BMW Key :Just the case no electronics or circuit board are included, Free logo
  • BMW Key Fob Case:Easy installation which does not require reprogramming
  • BMW Replacement Key:This is a replacement part to match the original in form and function
  • BMW Entry Keyless Key:Please verify original remote does not have a red or green light, this part is not compatible
  • BMW Key Fob Cover:This item isn't a remote key, it's just a remote key shell. NO (remote/electronics/ignition or transponder chips)

I'm guessing the board from the original would drop right in?

I bought one. Only problem I had with it is the battery clip doesn't fit correctly. So the car keeps throwing a discharged battery warning.

I thought it was clear that this is only the case for your key, not a spare additional key. A great tip from the OP to those of us with worn looking fobs. Doesn't work with Comfort Access though!

Extra notes:
The only way for 99.99% of us to get a fully functional replacement or spare key is through the dealer.

There exists expensive equipment that can clone your existing key and some even more expensive equipment that can wipe and reprogram the CAS key transponder numbers via OBD2 to match used keys, but it is very rare to find a shop with this equipment and know-how. I have yet to find a locksmith that can even do it since the tooling is BMW specific.

Yea I recall a member trying to sell a key fob and guaranteeing it would work on a buyers car. We all told him it would not and he called us all trolls.

I grabbed one of these shortly after picking up my car, no difference to original fob, comfort access works just fine. Its a plastic case, dont know why any features would be any different. Here is a link to the one I got but looks exactly the same as OP

That’s the key case for a Comfort access car. It has the access door for the fob battery. It’s not the same as the link in the OP’s post and the battery provision is what makes the fob housings different.

Ah good point, didn't realize there was a difference.

Ordered one of these and did the swap last night with my one beat up fob. Pretty straightforward swap though splitting open the old one takes a bit of effort with a blade, and you need to be careful with it. Split open the old one, take out the circuit board, carefully pry open the new fob case, put the circtui board in the new fob, install the battery and voila. ComfortAccess works just as before.

The key fob that I have contains only the board and battery connected. I popped open the original key and used this new enclosure. No need to program anything as your only changing the case.

Exactly! There are screenshots on the listing that show if you have the opening in the rear of your key. This wont work for you

Oh yea sorry, forgot to mention I had to (carefully) dremmel the hell out of the old one Glad it worked, nothing like a nice fresh fob.

Yeah, I guess a dremel would have worked too. But a fresh fob is definitely sweet, especially for $12. Thanks for the link to the right one!
