Corded PSS' at 15K miles
So took the car in for 15K service, got new air filter, spark plugs and the 3rd oil change - all for free - but while car was on the rack the tech noticed both inside edges of my front tires were corded. The inside edge of the left front looks as bad as when I cord the NT01's on my track wheel set up.
Thing is, the outside edge looked fine and the overall tread was still above the wear bars so if not for the tech seeing, I really could have had an issue some time very soon with a tire coming apart These tires are the stock PSS 265/285 front/rear that came on the car and have never seen the track. Pressures have been kept totally normal and suspension is bone stock, about -1.4 front camber So my question is has anyone else had this happen at such low mileage? If not for Austin BMW seeing this today, I would not have realized it until the next time I switched to the track set up - or the tire disintegrated on the tollway at speed. From the side of the car, tires looked fine. They showed 15K worth of wear, but not needing replacement, least until it's on a lift and you can see the cording...very odd... |

The same exact thing just happened to me, however, my front tires had about 25k miles on them. Oem MPSS 255/40/18.
They were nearing replacement and had about 4/32nd of tread left so I was monitoring them closely. However, when I brought my car in for service a few weeks ago the tech mentioned that the front tires were corded. I was shocked since I had been regularly inspecting them and knew there was still some life left. But when I turned the steering wheel all the way to the side lo and behold the very inside edge of each tire was completely shot. I'm glad they caught it as I do a lot of highway driving and it looked like a blowout was imminent. I ended up having an alignment done after replacing the tires and the toe was way out of spec. I'll definitely be paying closer attention to this going forward. |

I'm in the same boat, although it's only one tire that's corded. My M4 has 25k miles on it, and the fronts need to be replaced soon, but I noticed yesterday that the inner wall of the driver side tire is down to the cord in multiple locations on the tire. I'm going to have to take it to get an alignment done as well, because the passenger side tire doesn't have cord showing anywhere on it. The worst part is that I'm switching to 275/30/19 fronts, and Discount won't have them in until *hopefully* Friday.

Same issue with my fronts at 22k miles. Passenger front was corded in the inside but driver front has even wear. Ended up finding a used front PSS with even wear to match my other front that was still good. Also did an alignment to correct any toe issues at the same time.
I'm planning to switch to a different tire brand and size next time around when my rears wear out, so I didn't want to buy a pair of brand new fronts quite yet. |

As others have stated, it’s definitely excessive front toe that’s causing the inner tire edge to wear more quickly than the outer tire edge. Get the car aligned before installing new front tires.
