VIN decoder, wrong paint color

So I recently picked up an F80 M3 and wanted to see if anyone here has run into this issue before. I plug my VIN into the decoder and it comes back as Mineral Grey Metallic. The car is actually Black Sapphire Metallic...any ideas???

Nope, it’s a certified pre owned and has never seen paintwork. The VIN tag on drivers door seal shows the correct paint code, but all the VIN decoders online say Grey, not black.

That's strange

I've run hundreds of VINs through the decoder over the years, I have seen a discrepancy just once or twice in all those VINs, so it is possible. Can't recall if it was color or an option, but I have seen it wrong before. But literally like once or twice out of several hundred VINs.

That's crazy. I think this is the case! Wonder if BMW USA could explain it?

I don't know where those VIN decoders get their information from, but it seems like they're incorrect. That is pretty weird since those colors are definitely different and have different codes.

If you take the key to the service desk and ask for a key read, see what it says.

Quite funny, but I actually had the wrong VIN number. The last digit was incorrect!
