What part is this, and is it supposed to look like this?

I Just had a used M4 delivered that I purchased. Everything looks okay except today when walking by in good sunlight I saw what looks to be some sort of front bumper mount. I tried to find some photos with front bumpers off but can't really tell from them if it is supposed to be curved like this. Most of what I've seen show this to be fairly straight or parallel to the ground. It appears to be part 51117255393 but I'm not sure. The car had a rear CF diffuser so I think there may have been one on the front. I'm stuck at work and plan on jacking the car up when I get home to check. If this IS supposed to be straight and not curved up what else should I check? Should I pull the front bumper to take a look?

Uh oh might be bent oil cooler. Also there's a huge rock stuck in the grille. Check for intercooler damage too.

Looking at the oil cooler locations that could be it. There was a gap between that metal and the front bumper where from what I can tell the oil cooler should sit. I'm wondering if they caught something and pulled it back.

confirmed it is the oil cooler. its bent bad but not leaking. it appears the previous owner caught their front lip on something and as it tore off it caught the cooler. Going back to the dealer on Monday for an estimate and talked with the car seller. Not the way I wanted this to start.

Man that is unfortunate. Hopefully the damage isn't worse than it looks. Another guy here had a whole engine failure from this (albeit may not be your situation at all).

Keep us updated!

Man that looks rough. Did you not do a PPI before you bought it?

The bigger question is how the heck does THAT happen and not leak oil, yet a small piece of road debris kills a motor. Rhetorical of course but still...

Hope this gets sorted out and makes you whole. I’d be furious

Is this from a private seller, from a used car dealer, or from a BMW dealer?

Check your purchase paperwork. If from a dealer you might have a few days to return it and unwind the deal. Not all states require this.

You'd be amazed at the sort of impacts a radiator can take and yet not leak. Poiseuille Jr once had a catastrophic brake failure at the end of a long straight and went end over end right over the barrier and landed on the radiator. Used that radiator for the rest of that season with no problems. Of course, Jr's motors don't cost $50,000......

Yeah I’m aware. I was being rhetorical. When I removed mine to clean it, there was so much road crap sitting on top.

That cart looks fun!

This settles something I've been a bit anxious about lately. Only 8 months of ownership and my radiators are starting to look pretty ragged. Lots of dented fins.

Unless you removed it for the pic, you're also missing the plastic underpanel

Pre-Purchase-Inspection? If that is what you are asking. Not exactly. I had a friend who lives out in Virginia, which is where the used car dealer was, go out and take a look and drive it. He didn't notice anything except a few scratches here and there, which I was okay with. Depending on the light it isn't very noticeable and probably why I didn't see it coming off the car hauler at my house in Oklahoma. I didn't help that they arrived at 8 pm.
This especially stinks because I've been waiting for essentially this color and feature combo since around Nov last year. Unfortunately, here in Oklahoma City there is only one BMW dealer within a reasonable drive and they "might" have 1 or 2 used and 1 or 2 new M4's at any time. If one popped up within a 5 hour drive I would definitely consider eyeballing it first before buying but it really isn't an option most times.
I did talk with the dealer and sent them some picture and they did "seem" to care about the issue. I will get a full estimate for replacement on Monday after work and see how they want to play it. Did a little research on VA purchase rights and if they don't work with me I may be able to sue for repairs or return the vehicle. It does look to be cosmetic minus the OC and worst come to worst I'm out the cost of a new oil cooler and I leave the front as is and learn my lesson. On a positivish note I did find some other rando parts sitting between the kidney grills and the radiator. Not sure what they are but only way to get them out is to pull the bumper or grills and I figure BMW will do that to check for any frame/structural damage on Monday.

It is very gone. I'm sure it got thrown away with the old front splitter.

Oil cooler at the dealer It will probably be $1,000
Your missing under body plastic if you upgrade your looking at $500 for metal and your front bumper belly pan clips are torn off so you need a front bumper cover painted installed $1,800/$2,500 not sure what that SMP bracket is in your hand but I'm gonna say $4,000/$5000 in repairs depending on body shop and what options you have in front bumper I may be way off but that's what I see

If it makes you feel better like they said try to return car but honestly as long as most of these forum members keep cars I don't see why they don't buy more cars from auction and drive them the 6mo yo 3yrs they keep them and save money or make money off the sale later and base the length you keep it off the quality of the car as you drive it.

*differental wasn't changed at exact miles don't buy
*oil wasn't changed every 5k don't buy

I think that's probably about right as far as cost which isn't worth it in my opinion since I somewhat overpaid to begin with. what is the deal with the diff?

That bracket is the only thing that worries me. The oil cooler very common on these cars.

Your looking at $1200 bucks of parts and labor for that and the undertray. Had to do it on my previous f80 (possum jumped out in front).

If you start looking closely at f80/82/83 on IG you will see the bent oil coolers showing in a lot of pics. Not the end of the world unless it's leaking. I am ocd so I got mine swapped even though it was not leaking.

Good luck.

Are you speaking of the bracket that holds the oil cooler in place?

Of course I now notice that the CEL is on. P0420 and P0430. Appears to be something with emissions and from what I can tell cats or O2 sensors. I would think I would be able to hear if the car had Catless DP's. I guess I will have them check that out as well on Monday. If it does have them I may just clear the codes and not mention it, lol.
