SA asked if I've been "drifting"

I took my car in for a service at around 25k (spark plugs, filter, and oil). When I go to pick it up the SA pulls my car up and hands me the keys, but he asks "have you been drifting?". Then mentions something like " the tech said there was some drifting faults."

At first I was a bit confused because I wasn't quite sure if he really meant drifting. So make motion of donuts with my hands and asked "you mean drifting?!!". I emphatically said no and found it quite shocking/funny/taken a back he'd ask me that. For the record I have never ever drifted my car. I actually drive pretty conservative.

After I told him no, I told him the traction control warning comes on very easily in these cars as the tires are undersized, I mentioned I could light up the TC leaving the BMW parking lot at 75% throttle. I made my point even further by telling him i got roughly 20k on my first set of tires.

I wouldn't say he was accusatory, i just found that question very odd. He said something along the lines of "well, its an M3 ect etc"

I was curious to see if anyone has ever had an experience like that. I thanked him and I left. I only have 11 months left on the lease and plan on moving into something else (hopefully an 18 lease take over, but the S5 sport back looks really nice and could hold me over till the G80) but i am wondering if they'd try and flag me for something. Is there anyway i can find this out because then i would have a problem and definitely be talking with the service manager of this dealership.

If it's TC-induced then folks that take their BMWs (not just Ms) in the snow would be getting a heck of a lot more of these errors, so I'm really not sure where he was going with this comment.

Sounds more like the SA not actually understanding what the codes being reported were.

Maybe it was one of the following codes which have the word drift in them but have nothing to do with drifting as an action on the road...

40A4 EGR Actuator Position, Long-term Drift
40B4 EGR Actuator Position, Long-term Drift
4E0E Swirl Flap Actuator Position- Long-term Drift
4E14 Swirl Flap Actuator Position- Short-term Drift

There was nothing on the paper work he gave to me when he returned my vehicle so maybe the tech mentioned it only.

Now, I'm not nearly as smart as your SA, but I'm pretty sure those genuinely do mean your car has been drifted. Here are some others they look out for:

4203 Glow Module Communication - You used your phone to communicate with the Glamorous Ladies of Wrestling. For some reason.

4477 UnIntelligent Battery Sensor - Not that committing battery is ever a wise thing, but on top of that, someone who is really dumb did it this time, and worse - they used your car as the weapon! Bastards!

45E3 Control Master/Slave - This means some kinky BDSM action went down in your car. You devil!

4577 Crash Message - EKP Fuel Pump Whoops! You ran right into the gas pump while filling up your car. Warranty voided!

Using these and other very explicit messages, your helpful SA can get you the answers you need with very little training at all, while providing BMW up-to-date information on what you are doing with your vehicle. It's a fantastic service they do, those guys.

Sounds like it's only a matter of time before that tech is working somewhere where he can give people "discounts" on blinker fluid replacement.

Have you ever had a chassis malfunction code thrown? It’s a common problem with the accelerometers on the struts in this platform. If the tech saw those and blamed it on you, then he’s a moron.

I would inform the SA, that it’s in M car and SHOULD be able to be drifted without throwing codes. I actually found that drifting was one of the things this car was really good at. For F’s sake, every commercial marketing the M4 showed it drifting.

Actually yes. At least once just pulling out of my driveway. I've had a few random codes (failed lamp) over my time having this car. They all clear once I turn off and start the car again.

The problem here may be that you're SA is confused. Show your SA these pictures. The first gentleman is not drifting. The other two gentlemen are drifting.

These codes are dangerous. It'll be like Need For Speed, where guys will be holding their drifts longer to go from 4E14 to 4E04.
