Wheel Damage Advice
I took my M4 out on track for the first time on Sunday and literally drove the wheels off it...... (See Pics) After my 3rd session my wife noticed that the outer layer of the polished part of one my 437m wheels was peeling off. Anyway I drove home and inspected the car further and the only way I can describe the bits that are peeling are like brittle pieces of smoked film? clear coat.
I took the car to BMW yesterday as the car is still under warranty and they told me that my wheels have been wrapped and it isn't a factory finish by BMW. I was surprised at this so did some research last night and found out that BMW offered a Ferric Gray coating/ Shadow Chrome coating on these wheels and wanted to know if any of you knew if this was correct or could shed some light on the issue. The car is due back at BMW tomorrow for another warranty issue and I plan to go prepared with some information if in fact they should warranty the damage. P.S The wheels are in perfect condition with no scuffs marks or imperfections and the surface under the coating is perfectly polished. Thanks in Advance everyone. |

What an idiot. That "wrap" is the literal OEM tinted clear coat separating from the metal. If anything qualifies for warranty replacement, it's this wheel. Do not accept them trying to respray it; it will not match. Get a replacement wheel.

Whoever told you that is really special as the other poster mentioned it's the factory clear. Speak with the service manager and if they still won't comply call BMWNA and go somewhere else.

Agreed..factory tint...found out it is very hard to replicate as bmw shifted factories for manufacturing and there are differences between lots so make sure they give you a new one..

UPDATE:
BMW just messaged me to say that the wheels have been previously refinished and therefore not covered under warranty. Whats frustrating is I only purchased the car 3 months ago from a BMW main dealer, how are they not accountable for this? |

They're making the assumption that the "silver" wheels are the only option, when there are two different wheels for 437m |

Well I guess they could have been refinished by PO or dealer and BMW has records in the system, but if that were the case, whomever did it last should have a possible warranty in place.
Not understanding why BMWNA would not accept claim of above isn’t true. Weird. |

UPDATE:
So through many phone calls and calling in favors from friends who work for BMW it turns out that BMW refinished the wheels before I bought the car. I use a different dealership for service than the one i bought the car from. For some reason they didn't log the repair on their system so no record of it. My local SA has now agreed to repair the wheels for me here and invoice the dealership I purchased the car from. The great thing now will be that the wheels have a lifetime warranty on this type of issue should it happen again. Hopefully I will have the car back today... Thank you to everyone who helped with information on this thread it is greatly appreciated. Chris |
