cracking gear shift knob

Anyone else have this problem? Linear cracks along the gear shift knob... see the pic.
Dealer says that I hit the knob with something and caused the cracks myself... wants $1200 for repair. Car is still under warranty.

thoughts?

Is it just the plastic piece on the DCT knob that is cracked?
