Porsche Cayman GT4

Just curious...and probably off-topic, but it appears as though Cayman GT4's are currently the same price point as the M4 GTS. M4 has way more power, but wouldn't these two cars be cross shopped?

I just drove a Cayman GT4 and feel in deep love. I haven't driven an M4 GTS, but I can't imagine it's a better - or more pure- driving experience than that.

GT4’s a great cars, and still selling used at MSRP ......the GTS is more so a GT3 competition same price price point 140k new. GT4 is 100k spec’d well. I have a Boxster Spyder which is 5 Hp less than the GT4 its a better buy if you can find one ......only made in 2016 800 in the US. It’s a great sports car at 2800 lbs, not a lot of power 375 but fun to drive. My daughter just graduated from UGA(:

There are a couple of members on here that own both, Captain Unknown GT4 being one of them, that can chime in and give you their thoughts on both cars.

GT4 is built on a sports car platform while the other is based on a commuter car

I'm toying with getting rid of my 2016 M3 and getting just a regular 2015 Cayman S (manual, with the sport exhaust)....Cayman is such magic to drive. Much more fun to toss around than the F80. I've been looking for Boxster Spyder, but most are very expensive still. And Go Dawgs!! What did your daughter study?

She was a MIS graduate form Terry Business College. Spyders are great cars, and I’m dumping the M4 this week I just can’t love the turbo vs the older M models. NA motors are a dying breed ......my two keeps are my two spiders.

I have a GTS and a GT4. I already wrote back to your other post in the the other thread, so I'll just reiterate my preference - I'd take the GT4 over the GTS

Obviously this whole conversation is off topic. But on track, a solid novice in a GTS is faster than a good driver in a GT4. I'm not saying the GTS is more magical or inspired car, just that the GTS in the hands of a decent driver is faster. Not that Pat is faster than JW, but he will be soon with his GTS and working water injectors.

I can attest to this.. I only track 2-3 times a year at VIR and have been going on occasion (on and off) since 2011. I worked up to B group/ white solo group, and had been doing consistent 2:18-2:20s in my E92 M3/ F10 M5/ and F87 M2.

Then magically, the first time out with the GTS passed my mental block of 2:18s to 2:11s the first lap I had gained the confidence to turn of DSC.

The 2nd track day weekend, I got it down to 2:07s before my tires started delaminating. (Not before being signed off to Black Group

Given my next track weekend, I hope to hit my virtual best of 2:05s at VIR.

Seriously, this M4 GTS is a superhero car. Builds up confidence for average drivers/ part time HPDE guys like me. If I had more seat time, I'm sure I can go faster.

I felt safer in the GTS doing 2:07s than doing a slow 2:18's in my E92

So.. Thanks for the feedback guys I'm not rich enough for a 570S, a GT3, or even multiple toys. It will take me about a year but I think I'll save up for a GT4. I've always wanted a Porsche anyway.. Especially after 5 M cars in row.

GT3/4 all day long over the M4 GTS, and RS even more so. And that’s not even considering the facelifted cars which are well beyond that. They just feel like a far more special car from the moment you look at them and then things just escalate from there, PDK, steering, engine, exhaust, etc.
At auction the M4 GTS cars I think are in the 70s or low 80s...and that is largely because the GT3/4 exist.

What's your track experience level, and which of these cars have you driven on track? Not an attempt to discredit... Just curious if your opinion of the GTS vs GT4 or GTS vs 991.1 GT3, for example, is informed by track experience.

Many GTS's at auction? This is based on actual data?

If you look at his other posts on the forum, they're all pro-Porsche. I don't hate Porsche at all (actually would love to own a .1RS), but I don't take what he says as more than propaganda.

I’ve driven all three at Pocono Raceway. Just being brief, I think the GT4 is sublime, especially when you just dial in the front of the car. It like all Caymans is so easy to drive and get comfortable pushing the car. The GT3 is the best right out of the box. It requires nothing more than getting in and focusing on your lines - PDK S is truly remarkable and in my eyes really sets this car off. To me, it mostly feels like a larger Cayman with such poise and balance. The M4 GTS is certainly a better performance car than a regular car. You can tell it was meant for the track like the others, but doesn’t have the finesse and poise or the outright confidence to drive from my perspective. Power and torque were immense but not linear like the GTs and you were certainly aware that it was a much bigger car. There was nothing that stood out to me from a single aspect or from a more holistic view that I’d want to drive one over a GT Porsche which is why I am now looking for a GT4 for more money than I could get into an M4 GTS (mid 80s asking) vs well over 100k for a similar miles GT4.
I am an experienced driver and do several events a year - good car control skills and general ability to lap consistently. I am not a pro racer by any means though and certainly don’t make a living by racing.

Auction prices attached for reference.

Thanks man! Picked it up exactly 1 year ago and am loving it. Best M car I've ever owned, and I've owned quite a few

I too own both an M4 and a GT4.

Love them both, but the GT4 is magically delicious ! I came close to buying a fellow Rennlisters 2014 GT3 but after much thought I decided on the GT4.

Yes, the 991.1 GT3 is faster and revs higher but having had both a 09 E90 M3 and an 07 Audi RS4 I've already had higher revving motors and ultimately I didn't think that the GT3 was $18K better. I figure I can maneuver the savings of $18K towards getting something aircooled like a mint 914 or a 911SC next year. Getting the itch again for one.

I paid a tick under $100K for my GT4 w/3100 miles on it and its a mild spec car. Carbon 918 bucket seats and a few other options but no PCCB's which is fine by me. It has GT3 steel brakes and it weighs 2980lbs. It stops like nobody's business.

I run the front SB setting for more oversteer and have some Tarrett suspension links coming. It's a phenomenal car in every category.

There is a fairly decent inventory of GT4s out there and they are selling well below MSRP with certified warranty.

I own a GT4 and I briefly drove a friend's GTS. I also own a CS but I haven't tracked it or pushed it yet (break-in).

I think the GT4 and GTS are very different cars even if they deliver similar track times. So it's up to personal taste. The GT4 is a precision tool and more of a pure sports car. The GTS is a lot more powerful and a hairier beast. I think most people would prefer the GT4 but some can enjoy the challenge and unrefinement of the GTS more.

Other non-GTS M cars have the clear practicality edge over the GT4 which can make them enjoyable in more daily driving situations. Not the GTS though.

At VIR, the GTS is several seconds faster than a GT4. I am not getting into the driving experience, but the GT4 and GTS are not really comparable cars. The GTS lap times are closer to the GT3, and it's a very fun car to track. Of course, get what you like, but for the intended purpose, the GTS is a weapon!
