Clunking noise when shifting 6MT into first gear from neutral
Hey fellas. I don't know if this is normal behavior on the F8x platform but at times(not always), when I put the stick into 1st gear from neutral at a stop I hear this thud or clunk coming from the back. My E92 M3 never did this.
If I ease it into 1st, I cannot replicate this noise. Is this normal behavior? |

I too have been noticing this with my 6MT. It is a relatively subtle/subdued thud in my case, but definitely there under the circumstances you describe. I'm subject to the CF driveshaft recall, so whenever I get the OK to take in for dealer for that, will have them take a look at bearings, mounts, diff etc.
Curious about others' thoughts as well... |

I don't recall noticing that but will try to check next time. I wouldn't think there is any connection (no pun intended) to the driveshaft being CF or not given you haven't released the clutch yet right?

My car, '17 M3 ZCP, has done this since I got it 1.5y ago. Dealer said no issues. Also, no CF drive shaft recall on this one. I just ignore it / it's part of the car.

It's a side effect of the dual mass flywheel (DMF). It happens when the drivetrain unloads. BMW, Mustangs, VW, Audi, etc. all do it. Some are just more prominent than others.

New to my 16 M4 but I have the same issue. Mine can also be a rolling "clunk" when coasting slowly and then gassing in 1st gear...in either case it does not happen all the time.

I have more clunks, sounds, thuds, whatever you want to call it, coming from mine than I do from the 07 Civic with 260k miles that I daily. I consider the fact that these models are basically somewhat of a track car from the factory and we re going to hear crap from everything doing it’s job underneath. I embrace it because if I wanted a numb, peaceful experience I’d get a Lexus. If it’s running good then it’s all good.

I thought that clunk was the e-diff locking since it prepares for a launch when you are stopped and engage 1st.

This same thread has popped up every so often on every forum I've been on since forums started.
Every single manual trans car does this. It's simpy the synchro quickly taking up the driveline slack as it brings the trans internals to a stop. how is this not obvious? Normal. Every manual trans car does this. End of thread. |

This being like most manual cars they have good transmission days and less good days, some days all types of clunks or stiff shifting and some days smooth as butter, so i think this is normal. Depends on whether or not you are going down hill or starting off in cold weather sometimes. bottom line...normal me thinks

I learned on my first ever manual transmission car that it always helped to put it in second gear and then shift into 1st all while the clutch was depressed. Manuals have come a long way since then but that muscle memory hasn't changed with the times...lol
