Anyone else get the scary Recall letter affecting 13-18 USA diesels?
I got the NHTSA letter today saying my 2017 X5 35d is affected, but NO remedy is yet known. Letter was kind of scary :-O
I do miss the mpg in my 35d, but I am on 6 months of trouble free driving in my '18 G63 AMG, and the A/C is still so strong and cold, it will cool an apartment Happy New Year's Eve everyone! NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 18V755000 Coolant Leak Within EGR May Cause Fire The melting intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire. NHTSA Campaign Number: 18V755000 Manufacturer BMW of North America, LLC Components ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING Potential Number of Units Affected 44,368 Summary BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. If the EGR cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel engine soot. The high EGR temperatures may result in these particles possibly smoldering and melting the intake manifold. |

Wow! I was just posting this, since I had a 2017 40e and then a 35d. I was just wondering if anyone else got this, since it seems serious! Any car, any brand can and does get recalls....Mercedes too!!
You both have shown some true, nasty colours. How sad to be both of you! |

YES, received my letter today. You provided more info re. this recall than what was in the letter I received, total affected units, etc. Already reached out to the SA that got the wife’s F10 550i in and out in a week under CPP II. He’s got me on the list for this recall as soon as he has a loaner ready. As stated in the letter there is no remedy available, yet. They are doing inspections to determine how many units will need coolers and/or intake manifolds. I have not experienced any of the symptoms they list. Out here on the west coast we have a refiner, PROPEL fuels, providing a higher quality, cleaner burning, 70+ cetane fuel that I have used from new. I expect that I am in good shape because more than 90% of all of the 50k miles I’ve rolled up so far are highway miles. I’ll be following this thread, and the others about this, and will update as appropriate. deutsch100, I hope you continue to do so, also. Happy New Year to all.

How you liking the new G63. I didn’t like the last one for long distances. Too rough and uncomfortable. I got a sneak peep in the new one, really intrigued me. I’m considering it for my next car.

The G got much better suspension in 2016, so 2016-2018 G-Wagens are MUCH more comfy that pre 2016 (which were very firm and bumpy). Once you get used to the wonky and "unique" steering in the G, it is amazing to drive. On the highway it just eats up miles and the seats are officially endorsed by the German Back Assoc. Supremely comfortable and supportive. I think the G is much better on long drives, than in the city. City is not bad, but I love the stability and heaviness on the highway. The narrow width of the 2018 and older Gs are great for parking though. The G is tall, but quite narrow...just zips in! The iDrive in the F15 is MUCH, MUCH better than Mercedes Command system. Command isn't terrible, but BMW iDrive is light years better! |

All the mentioned symptoms mentioned in the recall appeared on my f15 a few days ago and it went into limp mode and stalled. It had its egr valve and cooler replaced as they had melted etc and it was a fire hazard.
Pretty horrible all round. BMW said no courtesy car as out of warranty. No idea if it might happen again as it sounds like a design flaw. I think BMW should offer a lifetime warranty in relation to the affected parts. |

It does over here - BMW corporate will underwrite a 'replacement' courtesy car for anybody with a warranty to claim against and offer one as a goodwill gesture to those that don't.

BMW Corporate just don't seem to care about customer service but my dealership (Sycamore in Peterborough) have always been superb. The difficulty is that no one can give anyone a timescale on it. |
