Oil and Maintenance Recommendations
so i've decided to perform my first oil change on my 2013 650i and was wondering what everyone here is running. i'm planning on changing out the oil every 6 months so i was thinking of using mobil 1 5w-30 full synthetic since it's done right by me in previous cars. i'll also be using an oem filter.
i also plan on swapping the air and cabin filters. the car just reached 34,000 miles so are there any additional issues i should address? brake fluid, coolant, transmission fluid? any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks! |

I’m not sure I’d use the Mobil 1 as I don’t believe it’s BMW LL-01 rated. At least the 5W30 isn’t. The 0W40 European formula used to be years ago, but Mobil 1 changed the formula and dropped that certification. I use Pennzoil Platinum Euro formula 5W40, which is a pain because I can’t find it in stores. If you really want a 5W30 weight, I think Liqui Moly makes one that is LL-01 certified, but I’m not sure who else does.

IMO, use OEM oil and filter. There are no known issues with the N63 for you to go with a thinner oil and you run into more issues with thicker oils if you don't properly drive your car when the motor is cold. In terms for the maintenance plan, there are 2 places for reference:
1. Check the warranty/maintenance booklet, they lay out the major servicing intervals such as plugs, diff fluid, etc 2. get your key scanned at a dealership. They will print out what your CBS counter says is due and mileage to the next maintenance item. This is what I do every single time.

I do the oil change every 15.000km and have the sparkplugs replaced every 30.000 km (cars are tuned though) and the coils after 60.000-70.000 km. I let change transmission oil after 100.000. Brake fluid is normally changed every 2 years but it's always good to have it checked at least once a year. As engine oil I have been using Castrol 0W40 LL04 for years on my F32 and now on my F06.

i went with valvoline synthetic 5w-30 since the price was right and it's one of the options in the manual.
the car 34,000 miles so i think the plugs are fine. i still need to swap out the brake fluid. any recommendations? |

I use Castrol SRF Racing Brake Fluid which exceeds DOT3 and DOT4 specifications. The typical wet boiling point is 270deg with the typical dry boiling point being 310 deg. C. Both are very good values. Though recommended for "high performance vehicles and race conditions", I have found the pedal and brake feel to be great also as an everyday driver (I never tracked the car).
On the downside it's very expensive but normally 1 litre will do or even a bit less. MOTUL is another one which can be recommended and is used a lot. Around the Web there are some decent reviews about the most common and amongst enthusiasts most popular brake fluids brands and types. I personally would stick with Castrol or Motul but other people may have good experiences with other brands. It's quite a world if one gets into it. |
