Oil Usage on a 2013 650ix

I'm just posting this as a point of reference. Just had my oil changed at my one year state inspection interval. I drove 2,900 miles since the last oil change.

The car is a 2013 650ix that was built on 1/15/2013 and now has 29,000 miles on the odometer. Now I do drive this car as a luxury car and I don't do a lot of full throttle accelerations and do drive it rather conservatively. I've got a 2016 Corvette for my spirited driving.

Anyway, the car used 1/2 a quart of oil in those 2,900 miles. I'm happy with that.

i've often had two quarts added after just 1,000 miles or so. when it was under warranty, i asked about it maybe 5 times and was told it was within spec, but the SA said he'd be worried about it if it was his own car. another dealer did a full drain and test and completely signed off on the consumption as well

You should top off with the same oil (viscosity) you are currently using.

I always keep my receipts from the BMW dealership of what was done as well as to what they used....and in the case of fluids...the 11 digit BMW part number so that you will have a record in case you need to order more in the future.

When I had my PPI (post purchase inspection) done back in Sept/2018...I had them change the oil and they used BMW 0W-30 twin power turbo oil (and gave me 3 free liters). I believe what was used before the change (around 2016) was 5W-30 twin turbo oil:

Thanks. Just spoke to my dealer. They said this stuff is Shell. Any Castrol or Mobil 1 fully synthetic 0W-30 or 5W-30 would be fine

Just an FYI...Shell is the current "eye candy" that has paid BMW to be the girl they bring to the dance. Mobil 1 and Castrol are the last two girls that have taken that early morning "walk of shame" from BMW's "bang pad".

So Shell's oil products (aka Pennzoil) is the current brand being pushed and has the current "LL" (long life) oil specs. Unfortunately one of the former oil brand "darlings" (Mobil 1) no longer meets BMW's long-live oil specs.

Looks like Shell has paid for BMW's blessings up to 2022. Here's a link to the Pennzoil site that lets you select your model/model year to determine which oil is recommended: https://www.pennzoil.com/en_us/oil-s...X1VTL2Jyb3dzZQ

Haha that's funny. Good to know. Quick question. Why according to Pennzoil's website the recommended oil is 5W-40 while the rebottled dealer stuff is 0w-30? Shouldn't they be the same?
