Comfort Access Theft in UK

Just bought a 2017 40d M Sport plus. I fancied the comfort access but in the end deliberately avoided it due to theft issues from remote scanners. Couple of Merc's stolen from my area recently too with remote access. Maybe I'm just paranoid but it's sad avoiding a car because bottom feeders target them with this feature. Sure I could have bought an after market device but shouldn't have to. So for me I got HUD, HK sound, cold weather pack and LED signature lights.

So, I buy the car, dealer picks me up from train station in an orange i8 and we're talking in the car. They recently had 2 customers with cars stolen using the scanning method and he said in the newer bm's they now deactivate the key when it's been stationary for a few mins. Maybe when I trade in I'll get comforts access.

I have the same car but with comfort access, so when at home, I put my key fob in a metal box (safe). My understanding of this is that even without comfort access, they can still relay a signal from the key fob. Determined scum bags will find a way around anything if it means they don't have to go out and work for a living.

My X5 40e 2017 has comfort access.
I wanted more comfort and do not get too panicky about negative articles in media.
Incase something happens - I have a good insurance.

In Germany my insurance informed, NO INSURANCE COVERAGE when taking the X5 to east block countries, which actually shows how much appreciated this car is. ;-)

You have a nice ride, living in Germay - I had to get rid of my older Diesel, as some major cities plan to ban them in the town.

I don't know how they can deactivate the key after a few minutes because then how would it work…

With no easy way to resolve what happens with the key at home. While it may seem inconvenient, couldn't people get some kind of small box lined with something to stop the signal from going past the box lid?

The comfort (i.e. constant signal transmission) function in my Toyota remote can be deactivated so only buttons work. Quite a simple solution.

Based on movement of the key apparent. If it's not moved it deactivates

You can buy signal blocking bags for cellphones.
Only costs around $10-$20, just make sure to read reviews before ordering.
If you order a bag, also make sure to test it yourself...
Some cheap ones can leak the signal, despite being closed.

Makes sense. I don't think I'm insured either if I drive to Mexico.

So it needs an accelerometer or some sort then? I imagine this would only work on that fancy display key they have, not these run of the mill key fobs we have (or we'll be replacing the button batteries every day!).

Those type of sensors are dirty cheap and deactivation of a radio interface will actually help saving the battery life.

Good idea, BMW.

The sensors are cheap but they consume battery power and always have to be on and ready to send sent a wake signal to the radio on the key or else the key won’t work when you move them again without pressing any buttons. This might silly but the whole point of comfort access is you never need to press the buttons on the key fob.

So it only seems like something they would put in a key with a rechargeable battery like their display key.

this sensor consumes much less than permanently activated radio interface.
