40e Type Charger vs Tesla Supercharger?

I just purchased a CPO 2016 40e last month and I’m really enjoying the hybrid system. I live in Mississippi and we have a very limited number of public charging stations; however, I was traveling at the Mississippi Outlet Mall in Pearl (just outside of Jackson) and they had 8 free Tesla Supercharger stations with no users in site.

I drove up to check it out, but the plugs were different then the charger plug for the 40e. So is there an affordable adapter that would work from the Tesla charger or is it just not compatible? It seems like such a waste to have only Tesla Chargers, but I assume Tesla probably paid for the stations.

Tesla has their own proprietary charger. You can get a Level 2 charger installed at home. The charger is only $500 on Amazon. You probably need a qualified electrician to install it though.

When I live in California they had these public chargers owned by this company Chargepoint that were Level 3. I had this card that I would tap on the chargers to use them.

Not to be a smartass, but Google? EV and everything related to it becomes outdated pretty quickly, incl. whether non-Tesla car can or cannot use superchargers.

As a side note, with current gas prices and electric rates, only home charging makes financial sense, and even that depends on locality.

Doesnt the X5 40e come with a basic charger for home? For the size of the battery in the e models you dont need Level 2+. I even use only the BMW turbo cord on my i3. It did also come with a basic charger that can be plugged into any home outlet.

You are right that Tesla funded the stations.

Unfortunately the Tesla superchargers are Level 3 chargers(400v DC) and the X5 has no provision for any type of Level 3 charging. So there is no way an adapter could be made to charge the X5 off a Tesla Supercharger.

If it’s a destination charger and not a DC supercharging station you can use something like this:

Thanks for the great feedback. I’m using the level 1 charger at home, which is sufficient since it charges overnight. The main question regarding the Tesla charger was while I was traveling; it would have been convenient (and free) to charge the 40e while I was out of town.

Why would supercharger be free for her? Even most Tesla owners pay.

You want to charge 40e during long traveling? What sort of range and how fast does the battery recharge?
Long traveling might become very long waiting and shirt traveling...

A bit off topic, but what kind of mileage are you getting on a full battery charge? I think it's advertised at 17-18, but I saw a lot of posts of people getting in the 10-12 range.
