Recent Maintenance Turned Into Service

I dropped off my X5 for routine maintenance (oil change and filters) last week and it turned into much more. My service advisor contacted me the following day and informed me that they heard a noise coming from the front suspension and the steering wheel while going in/out. He stated there are Service Information Bulletin’s (SIB) for them and he’ll have it all repaired/replaced for free under warranty. I had noticed the steering wheel making noise occasionally but didn’t pay it too much attention, and I’ve never heard the rattling or clicking from the front suspension. I’m very appreciative and happy that they took the initiative to diagnose and repair it all.
Here are the SIB’s in case you need them.
SIB 32 01 15 - steering wheel column
SIB 31 03 17 - “front lower wishbones with index in 4 or lower and perform 4 whee alignment”

Note: My X5 is lowered on Eibach springs and I have the RC GTS Black, no issues with warranty or maintenance (so far).

Thanks for posting the Service Bulletins; glad to read that your dealer is being proactive with the repair.

They'd be silly not to. If there's a recall or service bulletin, they get paid by BMW to do the work. But that's good on them to go ahead and do it BEFORE you actually had to go there and complain about it!

I agree, but we all know how some service departments can be. I have a feeling they pulled up the available SIB and checked on them.
I was going to post only the SIB’s but thought it would be a bit off without context.
Plus I had 3 days in a 2019 X3 M40i that I drove hard, so that was nice as well.

Thoughts on the X3 M40i especially in comparison to your F15?

I really enjoyed the X3 M40i, more than I thought I would. I drove one during the ///M Driving Days last year at COTA, but it was only for a short 1/4 mile drag strip (stop in the box). I wasn’t impressed with it at that time, probably due to it being in the mix with several other true ///M vehicles such as the X6M, M4, and M5. Driving them all back to back made the X3 M40i seem weak (obviously).
But real world driving for 3 days and 300+ miles left me impressed. Other than it being smaller (interior and exterior) and lacking staggered wide rear tires it is a great riding SAV. In Sport Plus/Individual mode it was very quick and the exhaust was on par or better than my MPE. It also was loaded with updated tech compared to MY2016 X5. The seats were too small/narrow for my liking, I’d have to see about an upgrade option. But the price was right, it has a MSRP at $61K and had some nice 21” wheels.
Overall it’s a nice option if you don’t need the space and room of the X5, it fit much better in the garage as well.

Surprised you got the X3 M40i as a loaner; your dealer must treat you well.

I don't trust service departments who claim problems I don't see and then start wrenching on the car (or claiming to wrench on it) to get manufacturer money. My current dealer is "dying" to get the car in for a $25 state inspection. I'm sure if I do they will turn up all sorts of exciting warranty and SB work.

Glad you got the wishbones taken care of! Fun fact: something like this would not be covered by CPO/extended warranty.

X3m40I seems like a fun car to push. Just wonder how the X3M will do when they come out later this year.

I had mine in for service not too long ago, I recently noticed a creaking noise from the front suspension, they confirmed and replaced both rubber mount/ball joints. Noise was gone (so I thought), had Eibachs installed as well as new wheels and noticed the creaking is back. Have to take it back.

As a new X5 owner, I'm just curious how you noticed the creaking. Is it while driving or did you just push down on one corner? I'm contemplating giving my dealer a buzz to see about being proactive with this stuff - if possible.

Thx

Low speed turns, like pulling into my driveway. Going over dips while turning as well.

Normally, I would agree, but knowing the history of the F15's having wishbone issues I didnt think twice. Specifically, P1et and others on here posted about theirs being replaced under warranty and a couple threads covering this known issue. Also, I mentioned that I have heard the steering wheel column creaking as well, so it was a no brainer for me.
If it was something that I havent heard of as a common issue, I would go in and have them show me prior to agreeing to the repair.

I say wrench away, my dear chums! Keep that X5 for a week and wrench to your heart's content!

Great question, maybe someone will chime in that had to pay for it.

Got my truck back from dealer, tech confirmed noise, ended up changing out both L/R tension struts. Time will tell, I'm glad at least I still have full coverage for few more months. SA advised vehicle has aftermarket springs along with wheels, I said hold up buddy, 375's are OEM wheels, he corrected himself and said tires, that's more like it.. Work log states springs/tires as well lol.

Ended up with a 2019 X3 loaner as well, loved the quality of tech, and it has some zip, but it felt small/cheap to me. When I got back into the X5 I felt way more impressed lol.

I had control arms and front wheel bearings done a while ago, both under warranty though. The former also had an SIB out, but there was no noise; the dealer was just proactive.
