Some X5's had serious fires, never fully explained, that started in the battery area.

Suggested action: don't just get the cable repaired, do get a capable BMW SA look into this matter, they may even replace some stuff that could have caused the fire, without telling you.

that is very interesting, where exactly are these connections? those yellow things are butt connectors used to crimp 2 wires together. looks like all those wires were cut and spliced together before. i could be wrong but i doubt OEM wiring from the factor is done this way.

ps: ur battery is also not original, what is the history of the car?

I’d about to say the same thing, it looks like this was a hack job of replacing the battery cutoff module. May have to replace the whole wiring and replace the module it self.

i got curious and looked up butt connector ratings. all of them lists voltage ratings only (600V max) and the 1 n only place that has the current rating of 4 gauged sized butt connectors lists them as 48 amps max... and the one ur using is being used on a fuse that has a rating of 125 amps. also i suspect that burned wire either powers the starter, or something electrical hungry like the power steering unit.

Ah yes. How could I not notice the butt connectors?
You definitely need to get rid of those butt connectors. Or leave them as is and solder them together.

Car was repaired at a local shop when i was involved in an accident 2 years ago, spoke to the shop already and they said they will check and fix the issue free of charge.
