Drivetrain malfunction and low fuel
I started a track session with 1/2 tank of fuel. Track has 2 right hand long high speed turns that are close to each other. Right after second turn car went into limp mode with “Drivetrain Malfunction” warning, apparently due to lean fuel condition. I had over a 1/3 tank remaining. Put fuel in and all OK but can’ get rid of warning. I bought a Foxwell NT510 scanner/ reset tool but can’t get rid of the warning. Is this one of those warnings that I need to go to a dealer or independent?

In my experience when the car has been starved for fuel in a turn, it always fixed itself pretty quickly. Typically within 1-2 corners at most. One of the vendors here would probably know, I'm thinking tom @ eas.

This happened to my buddy at the track a few weeks ago. Turns out his charge pipe (I think) had come loose.
Take it to the dealership and have it checked out. Perhaps don't tell them that you were on the track when it happened. Lol

I had the same at NCM a while back, ran very low on fuel and I think it stalled and then threw that malfunction error. I fueled up the error stayed around for a few *days* I believe and then eventually went away. I never ended up going to the dealer or anything. Now I only run 2 sessions per tank that way I don't run into any issues.

Still have the drivetrain malfunction. But it might be cleared by dealer because of a recent problem. I topped off my tank with 100 octane (about 6 gallons worth) the night before a track day. The next morning the car wouldn’t start. Flatbed to dealer and as I suspected, water in 100 octane. Waiting to see if comprehensive will pay. At least, the low pressure pump in tank and fuel filter need to be replaced. That’s around $1700.

Question, why were you running 100oct fuel? Can't remember all your posts, if you're tuned or not. |

Not tuned but M4 was tuned for 93 octane by BMW. So this gives me a little more performance, or at least that is the theory.

I've had that happened to me too. It was summer time and I was pushing the car pretty hard on the track. The car went in limp mode and I pulled over to the side. I turned it on and off and the Drivetrain Malfunction light went away. But 20 seconds prior to that the "High Temperature Transmission" light also came on. Once the car cooled off, I continued tracking and the car was fine. Strange that yours stayed on, I'd get it check.

I got the car back today. They dropped the fuel tank to clean it out. Seems like they could have cleaned it out from the top. They installed new low pressure pump assembly and fuel filter. Seems to run fine. They also cleared the drivetrain malfunction warning. Sure hope this doesn’t happen again.

Thanks flying low, this is really good information. Was it a brand name gas station? Really want to avoid.
I’ve only bought 100 octane from Laguna Seca and Sonoma and no issues, but planning SoCal and surrounding track days soon. |

WSIR has 100 octane on track, but I've never tried it and it's $7/gal iirc. Anyone else tried it? I'm a bit weary of condensation, but two track days on their 93 fuel and no problems. However, 100 doesn't get used as often, so risk is potentially higher.

I have received the driveline error before when I have fuel starved the engine. The only difference is that I cleared up after I filled up.
On a side note, the F80 is a thirsty car when on track and running fast. My e90 used to get 2 sessions per tank before I would fill up. I now make sure I have at least 10-12 gallons before I hit the track. If I am running a fast track like Road America, I cannot make 2 full sessions on one tank. I experiencing about 8gallons use per 30 session. On shorter tracks with less speed I can get 2 sessions. It only takes one time coming out of a corner on throttle and have the car go into limp mode to scare you. I do not want that happening so I add a few gallons or top it off if the time allows

This just happened to me yesterday. At a Road America event, I filled up at the track with 98 octane, the lowest they had.
Went out, two laps into the session, drivetrain malfunction, limped into pits, guys next to me had a scanner, multiple misfires, while inspecting a bolt on the pipe after the air filter is missing, it looks like is rotated a little but it feels like the pipe is seated from what we could tell, we adjusted the pipe as best we could. Cleared the codes. Let the car cool down, car fired up. I went and put 5 gallons of 87 octane in. Next session I short shifted and kept it below 6,000, if it was going to fail i was going to let it. No issues Last session, full speed, No issues. Three hour drive home, No issues I have a appointment with my dealer, I told them what I was doing, they know I track. Question, 1. do you think it was the 98 Octane? are the sensors that sensitive? 2. Could that pipe unseated, then seated enough to hold a full race session? I'll update after my appointment on 9.29.20 Thanks KP |

Were you at Road America with GridLife!?! I filled up with 98 there too but it got me up over a half tank and I didn't have any issues running a longer TA session in the afternoon on Sunday.
