So this has happened twice now over the past month. I drove somewhere for lunch for a few hours, go to start the car and it just cranks, without turning over. I let it go for about 5 seconds, turned it off - tried again and the car fired right up. l have no idea what it could be. Wanted to see if anybody else has experienced this.. I'm at 43k 17' M3 ZCP stock.
Thank you |

Back when I had n54 engine car, long crank was the signal to get fuel pumps (both high and low pressure in car’s case!) replaces. But I haven’t read of that being an S55 issue.
Have you checked your battery? I’ve had some cars where battery was strong enough to crank but not quite strong enough to start the car right up on the first try |

Happened once to me about five months ago. Press the Start button and it just kept turning for about 5 seconds then turned on. I wonder if it was me not pressing the start button in all the way I normally just tap it.

i am also having this issue. After parking the car for 3 to 4hrs, i start the car and it will crank longer (like 3secs) before firing up.
It is fine if the engine is hot. Still trying to find the cause of this. |

Low-pressure fuel pump needs to prime the high-pressure pump if the car's been turned off for awhile. Very possible that there's an issue with the low-pressure pump.

Check your battery terminals and verify they are both tight. My story....
I had a somewhat similar situation randomly occurring. I would occasionally have a a 3 second delay during a start followed by a " Battery discharged" message when driven a short distance. It happened maybe 3 times in a 6 month period. Flash forward to last Tuesday when I disconnected the negative terminal on the battery to change plugs, upgrade intakes and charge pipes. The 10 mm negative terminal nut was literally spinning in my fingers. I guess the dealership forgot to tighten the nut during a maintenance visit. |
