Newb pre-pickup question...

Hello all,

Planning to pick up my new to me ‘16 650i GC from the BMW dealer (out of town purchase) on Saturday morning (July 27)

It has the M Sport package, which as I understand comes with 20” wheels, not 19”. The build sheet with my vin number indicates 20” rims. The salesman indicated it had 19” rims. I did not clue into this detail until after we came to terms of the deal. I have not mentioned this discrepancy to him yet.

It is still under factory warranty, and is CPO’d after that. The CPO inspection tasks the technician to check for “OEM Wheels”. While the 19’s are OEM for some models, they are not for the M Sport which the dealer indicates it is.

Do you think I can expect them to swap out for 20” rims and tires?

Thanks!

L

I cannot swear to the GC, but on the convertible the MSport package does not dictate the wheels. Many, probably most, MSport cars have 19" wheels. Do you have pictures or a link? The 19s and 20s looks nothing alike.

You can check the VIN in one of the BMW decoders to see what the factory build sheet says, but the dealer will probably tell you that you negotiated for, and got, the car you saw. I doubt they'll swap out for rims that have a list price difference of over $2000 more than what you have because the salesman may have made a mistake.

I can't speak for the 650, but the 640 came with either the 19s or the 20s with the M Sport package. The 20s were a $1200 add on.

Go to BMW USA.
Once there go to My BMW sign your car in with the VIN.
You will see exactly what colors, packages, and each option the car came with.
This will included its wheels.

A 650i with a bonafide M Sport Package will come on 20’s.

Thanks all. I have plugged in the vin on BMW VIN Decoder as well as looked at the build sheet that the dealer provided. In both instances it lists the wheels as 20”. The decoder even lists them as M373 (20”).

BMW USA also confirms 20”.

It looks like the prior owner did what I did - had the dealer swap wheels the other way. Mine had 20s, and I test drove it with run flats and it was like it had stone wheels so I asked them to swap to 19s. I have seen at least one other that way where the build sheets says 20s. I personally like the look of the 19s better, but that's me.

If they have another car with 20s, they might swap, but if it's a deal killer for you then keep looking. All you can do is ask them.

Yep...one of the previous owners probably swapped the wheels to 19". If you ureally like the car...keep the 19" and hold onto them. They can become your dedicated winter wheel/tire set-up. Then find a set of 20 (373 wheels are popular and easy to find by just perusing the for sale forums here and other BMW sites). Even if you prefer other 20" wheels...the 5/6/7 (f10/f11/f06/f12/f13/f01/f02) series share similar wheel specs...so all of them are good prospects.

BTW, style 351 19" wheels are nice ones & are "M" wheels (they have an "M" badge on them, right?)....and if your local roads are not the "smoothest"...you may be better off with them espeically if they are mounted with run-flat tires.

Again, thanks to all for the excellent info!

Spoke with the salesman and sales manager and they said the previous owner swapped them. That was the story the manager gave me. The salesman had a slightly different story initially. Anyway, they gave me the option to bow out, but I will press forward. I am still very pleased with the deal and the car. I am thinking the 19’s may be a blessing in disguise as others have mentioned.

Flying out tomorrow, then driving it home with my wife. Looking forward to it!

Btw, I am coming over from the E39 world.

When I ordered my car, it gave me the option for 19 or 20 inch with M-Sport. I kept the 19's. They're plenty big, and if you have bad roads, you'll be glad to have them.

IF the car still has RFTs, make sure to get rid of them ASAP. They're horrendous on this car.

I can certainly understand the apprehension on the 20s, but they sure look bad ass on the car.

My 640i came with 19", it bothered me and I bought a set of 373.

It completely ruined the ride for me, and I went back to the 19" in a month.
