Yes, I bought the USB stick through the BMW dealer and it includes the access code. The cost was $116 but I didn’t need the code so I could have bought the stick without the code for half.

I purchased the USB, I paid $185 for basically 3 updates. The initial undate brought my system up to date with the latest map version. My purchase also includes updates for the next two years. https://www.bimmer-tech.net/shop/bmw...date-2018-2019

My apologies for ignorance - aren't software and navigation/maps updates covered by BMW manufacturing warranty? It used to be like that for my 2010 535i.
I still have a few months of warranty left for my 2016 640i GC. Could I ask the dealer to upgrade the software/maps for free? Thanks! |

I think its 2016 and newer, and I understand that OTA is just local maps, whatever that means - not the whole country. But this the first I have heard about being able to download maps to a usb for free. Can you share a link or at least a link to a place with a link?

Maps could still be the same. You need to check which version of maps you have in your car. If you go to settings in NAV then at the bottom it will have Navigation System Version at the bottom. This will tell you if you have premium or NEXT or whatever.
The difference with newer NBT is how you load the files. |

I ordered mine from BMWNAVUPDATES and they said it was the 2019 update. However: I just drove to Baldwin Hills and it still thinks that Obama Blvd is called Rodeo Road. Rodeo Road was renamed in May 2019, so I guess it’s possible that it didn’t make it in to the 2019 update. Since you got yours from the dealer, I wonder if you’d mind checking for Obama Blvd? Just curious to see if the ‘official’ update has that change. Thanks!

I don't really think there is an official vs. unofficial - it's the same database. I'd be pretty surprised that any NAV version would capture a May 2019 change. Does your screen says it's 2019? It will tell you that. I always assume NAV updates are a bit behind - especially for things like restaurants or coffee shops - some are already out of business and new ones have opened.

It is in Navigation. Press navigation, and when you have your map up push your iDrive controller to the right to go to the screen to the right of the maps. Version is at the bottom. At least that's how to get to it in a 2015.
And sometimes there is more than one version released per year. Mine is 2018-1. |

BTW, 2020-1 version is already out. There are good instructions on the neighbor thread: https://www.6post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1526116
