WTB: 35d somewhere near but not in NYC — and a question about options

New to this forum and now that we have kids I'm looking to get into something bigger (with better fuel economy). Any help from the community is appreciated!

The hunt is for a 35d and I'd love as many options as possible, but know that well-optioned 35d's may be hard to find within my budget.

Question — what are the "must have" options in your opinion?

Criteria:
  • 2016-2018 model year, open to '15 with exceptionally low mileage
  • Sports package
  • Less than 40k
  • Still under factory warranty for at least 1+ year
  • Not black
  • Budget in the $30's with some flexibility depending

Also, my wife is really into the Graphite Grey color which seems to only be available in the base package. Open to this but with the upgraded seats.

I live in NYC, but 100% prefer a car that has spent time elsewhere and will travel within 300 miles to pick it up.

Thanks everyone.

Anywhere in the $30's but have some flexibility depending. Hopefully that's realistic.

For a diesel, w/less than 40k miles, I would say no.
Have you looked in autotrader, car gurus etc?
There are some very good ones on this site, but are 50K+.

Diesels hold up their value better, although, if you wait a bit more, time is on your side.

Yes, I'm looking on all of those sites. There are a decent number of models in the high $30's, but nothing beyond basic options it seems.

There are some gorgeous rides here but alas, beyond my budget. That said, I like dealing with private parties over dealers and just reaching out here for leads I might have otherwise missed....

I have seen two, very well optioned.
Believe it or not, X5Ms out of warranty sell for less than those.
Perhaps a good opportunity will pop soon for you.
You may have to make some mileage concessions for the sake of good options though.

I don't think you can find loaded M-Sport with low mileage for 30K, expand the budget or go with basic one. Most of 2015 would be out of warranty by now,so if you want 1+ year you need to look at September 2016 delivery date to get it. For everything you listed the price would be in 40K ballpark.

I agree low to mid 40s would be your price. Besides the m sport package, some of the good options to have would be comfort access, cold weather package for the heated steering wheel, driver assistance package for the HUD and better display, surround view or DA2 package, HK sound system and main one for me was multi contour seats.
Some of the nice things to have is LED headlights, soft close doors, 20” wheels.
Are you stuck to diesel?

Good to know! It's helpful to get real world owners' perspectives on what's desirable.

Candidly, I'm torn between the 35i and 35d. I know there's a premium for the latter, but I always feel a little bummed out looking at the mpg on my E91 and think the diesel would be incredible.

I would recommend the diesel, very happy with it especially getting 26-28 MPG in the traffic.
